ok so tonight i checked my vaccum lines for leaks and i found none... the bolts on the manifold seem to be ok none were very loose but i didnt mess with them much because i didnt want to mess it up... i read you could do that if you didnt know what your doing... any ways .. i mean to tell you about one of my fuel lines.. if your standing on the drivers side of the truck looking towards the idle sensor.. the fuel line that runs under that im getting a loud clicking sound out of it... you can actually grab the fuel line under there and feel the click... i dont know if it has anything to do with anything but i know its not suspost to be like that... and again when i started my truck this afternoon it blew black carbon suit all over the driveway... its bad when you first start the truck.. im trying to type as i think so hopefully i make sense... but back to the fuel line thing... the line that runs into to top of the fuel pressure regulator makes no noise but the line that comes out the back end of the motor and runs back to the tank, i guess thats where it goes, is the one that makes the clicking sound.. and like i said you can really feel it just by touching the line...
thanks for the help..
Mike

fuel line should not be making any noise :)
the one coming uot of the regulator is the return line and the one going to the back of the engine is the feed line.

Have we tested fuel pressure?

If the fuel line is indeed making a noise I suspect a spark plug is arcing through the line's metal cover. In the dark you can usually spot arching witht he engine running.

Either this or you have a bad injector, or something is fishy. There is no way ythe fuel line should be making a noise, or pulsing, or anyhting like this.

ok about the spark plugs... i checked them the other night when it was dark and at a idle you could see them glow where the plug wires and and plugs meet but when i raced the engine the dang things really glow.. all six of them... is that normal..??
i just replaced the plugs but not the wires..... what does a spark plug arching mean??

i havent tested the fuel pressure yet.. i need to get a tester... i dont have one yet..
The fuel line is indeed making noise.. like i said the line going into the top back of the motor not the one running from the fpr.

what you think??
mike

Arching means the spark that is meant for the plug is actually leaving the wire before the plug and "arching" to the engine block, or ground (in your case it may be through the metal protective cover on the fuel line).

Sounds to me like you need new wires big time, you should not see any sparks in the dark, let alone "glowing"

How old are your plugs?

I also suspect you need a new ground cable form the battery to the frame and engine.

im not sure how old the wires are but they are probally pretty old... thats my next replacement...you think that could be part of my problems??

it could be your problem.
If spark is not reaching the plug then the result is a dead cylinder (gases never ignite)

How old are your plugs?
Dont overlook the battery ground cable

my plugs are only like a 1 or 2 months old... i just didnt replace the wires when i did the plugs..
a new batter ground wire too..? they go bad?

Yes they go bad and they are VITAL to the truck running and working properly.

Did this problem start with the new plugs? Or did you do the plugs and still have the issue?

The ground cable leaves the battery and goes to several places. It goes to the ground feed for the trucks computer (into wiring harness), it also has a lead to teh radiator support (body ground) and the main cable goes down to the frame (just in front of pass front tire) and then on back to the engine block back by the oil filter.

If the engine/frame/body are not grounded it will search for any other source to get fom the battery to wherever, in your case it sounds to me like its using the metal surround on the fuel line.

Also a ticking noise in the fuel rail would indicate a bad injector.
You can use a stethascope (sp?) to listen to each injector.

You can do a search for much of this stuff and find related problems/repair proceedures.

i had the problems before i changed the plugs.. i use a screw driver to the ear to listen to my engine parts.. the only real place i get the clicking is that one line..
it sounds tuff to change all the battery ground?

its pretty simple.
Auto parts places sell replacement cables with the number of leads and length you need.

Your truck should be a 4 lead, (2 small, 1 med, and one large), black cable I think 45" will do the trick.

However I chose a different route as I am not to fond of lead battery terminal things, they get weak over time, lose their grip, cables corrode, and the nut strips up the lead making it hard to tighten loosen. So I use Pheonix Gold (car audio shop) battery terminals and build all my own cables using wire and terminal ends from West marine, they have great prices and selection. Everything on my truck is soldered, and dieelectric grease to keep water out. Heat shrink over any splices, and sandpaper to get down to bare metal for any grounds.

Battery cables are a very popular topic on this forum, you might try a search.

There is a strap that goes from your windshield wiper motor bolt to the back of the 4.0L engine as well, this strap is very important for grounding as well as the battery cable.
Even if a cable looks okay outside, it may be toasted inside, so dont let it fool you.

You can replace it for like $10 and an hour of your time.

thanks for your imput on my problems.. ill post back here when i figure something more out..
Mike

changing plug wires saturaday and fpr tomorrow.. ill let you know how it all goes..
mike

another FPR?
You know a $1 air pressure gage can work as a gas gage for a couple of times before you destroy it :)
I have a $4 auto zone tire pressure checker that I have used on fuel rails about 8 times, still works!
hahaha

35 or so PSI at idle is what you should have. If you do then your FPR is fine.

i havent changed the fpr yet.. i still have the old one.. i can really use a regular tire pressure gage to check it?

How Much Torque Goes On The Upper Intake Manifold Bolts?
Mike

Dont you have a book?
Its not much, I call it "snug" like 18 ft lbs or something.
My book is at home..

i have a book just wandering if you knew off your head....

OH a test! hahaha There are only a few things I still use a torque wrench for on my truck, its all done by feel now...

Let me know how close I am?
