changing the thermostat....

I feel like a total newb posting this... but I've searched and couldn't find a thread that helped. I have a '91 Ex and I suspect the thermostat is sticking. I got a replacement and went out to change it tonight. Well, I'm an old school chevy guy... and on my 85 K5 I can change a thermostat in 5 mins if I have the tools out. The one in the Ex is a whole new ball game though.... I've tried every wrench and socket I have and I can't see any way to get to the bottom/left bolt that holds the radiator hose hardline thingy to the engine. Any tips? I checked my Chilton book... all it says is "remove the bolts"..... wow, I never woulda thought of that.

oh yeah... its got a 4.0L v6. Anyone? what tool do you use to reach those bolts?

If it is the bolt at the bottom, I use an open end wrench to get it loose. There isn't any clearance to get a socket on it. I have a 97 4.0 OHV, but I think the thermostat housing is the same as on your 91.

is the open end you use one with a wacky offset or kink in it? Dont see many opportunities for a "straight shot" at it. Guess I have to go out and buy some metric wrenches now. sigh.

I just did mine a few weeks ago. I took off the belt for easier access and was able to just barely get a socket on it but was a little ****ed. Used a 1/4" drive and like a 2" extention. If your truck is running cool then join the club. I replaced mine with a 195 and hardly any diff.

10mm open end wrench w/ a long thin handle. Believe it or not, I bought a set of Stanley wrenches at Walmart that are nice quality for the price. Most of my other wrenches are Craftsmen.

A Sears 10mm ratching open end wrench makes it a quick process. I recomend those. Best $$ I ever spent on tools.

Removing the belt does help.
