I just bought an 02 explorer limited. I like the thing but just noticed a chattering coming from the tranny in 2,3,4th gears. Once it shifts into overdrive it is gone or at least not as noticable? I had this thing checked out before I bought it and everything checked out fine. My main concern was the transmissions on these things and now it seems my nightmares have come to reality.

It is a V6 with 72,000 miles on it.

It shifts fine, no flashing OD light, I have the status display and everthing is OK there.

I read all the posts on the 5r55e transmissions, but if I am correct I have a 5r55w. Or is it the same transmission.

I got a suggestion on another board of the torque converter going bad which would be better than replacing a transmission.

Any other suggestions.

does the tranny fluid look or smell burnt, was the transmission ever flushed?

many of these problems can be fixed by a fluid change. Use a good full synthetic mercon V

Heven't smelled the fluid yet. I will pull it in the garage and drain a little and check it. I am taking it in to a local transmission shop to have them listen to it on monday.

Just thought about that on the way home today, but I can put it in park and still hear the chattering very faintly. It definately gets worse when it is in gear. I am leaning more towards the torque converter at this point.

I plan on climbing underneath it and having the wife rev it up to make sure where it is coming from.

Thanks again for the info.

Oh and yeah you have the 5r55w although internally they are very similar, the casting is completely different in a good way. There is a good writup in the tranny section on the differences between the w and the e series tranny.

Oh and the E is a close ratio the w is wide.
