I have a 98 Limited and randomly receive the Check Air Ride System message. I have brought the truck to Ford for repairs and they tell me they don't see any major problems but would have to look into the problem further to diagnose the issue. They could not quote me on the exact cost of the repair since they do not know the issue (range $100 - well over $1000).

I notice the truck does ride rougher and I used to hear the compressor come on but not since I've been getting the message in the console. Any suggestions as to what to check? Thanks.

Keith

mine cycles a LOT. the shocks are tired and I think the lines may leak. If i have any load on, it will cycle until the compressor cuts out and i get the check air system. After I shut the ignition off and restart, it works again. I think its just time for new shocks. If you find something else, Id love to know as well.

The air lines and shocks are prone to leaks, those are the big issues. Get under it and spray the line connections and shock bladders with a lubricant that is safe for rubber, like PB Blaster. The harsh weather is what kills them, and time.

FYI, buy new shocks now, they have been on eBay for a few years now, for $25 each, old NOS Ford ARC shocks.

I never hear the compressor come on at all anymore. According to the Ford dealership, they did not find any leaks or issues with the system with their basic tests. They would have to conduct more tests in order to diagnose the issue. I don't mind the ride so much and they said that I can drive the car as is without damaging the car further. Is that true?

It's hard to test for leaks without air pressure in the system. That means the compressor has to work, so that's the first place to start. Check the fuses and then if you still haven't heard it, put power to the compressor to check it.
