I think those are the codes...anyway it is showing lean system banks 1 and 2. I changed the fuel filter, the codes were thrown again...cleared them then cleaned the MAF sensor. I have not driven very far but so far no codes. By the way the MAF sensor was very clean, but I cleaned anyway. I am going to assume the code or check engine light will come on again.

If this does happen...by checking the threads on this site...I most likely have a leak in the intake manifold?

My question I have a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0l sohc motor. I am the original owner and it has just over 70K miles. Could I get Ford to cover under warranty...the car is in perfect condition? Any input on how to deal with this would be appreciated.

If I have to do myself, which I am a novice, what parts should I replace when doing this repair if I have the top of the motor apart? What part number of the intake manifold, should I buy the part from ford? Is there a thread on this for the sohc, most if not all of the threads are for the ohc?
Thanks,
Mike

im having the same problem with the same codes on my 96 ex.

i have replaced the upper intake gaskets, maf, iac, fuel filter, vacuum lines, and all o2 sensors and the rubber o-ring around the egr tube and i still have the 2 same codes.

i would replace your upper intake gaskets next. they are a common problem that set off p0171 and p0174 codes

Did you replace with a Ford gasket or after market? Was it easy? Estimated time to replace. Thanks

yes i went to ford and got the gasket, it took me about 6 hours to do.. first time always takes longer, if i had to do it again, it would take me maybe an hour.

i also have a the 4.0 ohv im not sure about how much of a difference there is going to be, shouldnt be too much different.

go to ford and get the gasket, while your there ask them to print off a diagram of how it all goes together. DONT LET THEM TELL YOU YOU CANT DO IT! they will do and say just about anything to convince you to have them do the work.

its not that bad, i would give yourself a weekend just to be safe.

Update:

Replaced upper and lower intake gaskets. So far no "Check Engine Light". You can fix this problem. A novice garage mechanic can do this in about 4 hours with most of the time with the rear upper intake screws...they are about 3" long located near the firewall just under a wiring harness bundle. Also the ERG tube is a pain in the butt. I spend time and cleaned all removed parts.

Buy the gaskets from Ford. They were under $40.

Hope this helps.

I have a 1999 Sport and replaced the upper and lower intake gaskets about 1 year ago and now that its cold again the P0171 and P0174 codes have come back and the check engine light is on. I did buy the new o-rings from Ford. When I replaced the o-rings I didn't mark the upper and lower intake pieces, can these be put on the wrong way? I took it apart again and didn't notice any markings so I reassembled it the way i had it in the first place. I didn't have any problems till it got cold. The the truck is hard to start when cold and the check engine light is on again with the P0171 and P0174 codes. Anybody ever had this problem before? Guess I will check for vaccuum leaks then if I don't find any I will replace the gaskets again. The engine has always been hard to start when cold. Sometimes the engine fires then shutters for a few seconds then purss like a kitten. I have cleaned the MAF, IAC, Throttle body and air cleaner. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks.
