Check Engine Light 97 Mountaineer

1997 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 liter Check engine light on, took car to Pep Boys for free code check. Two codes came up. P0340 cam position sensor and P0443 evap purge control valve. Car runs fine but cant get through emissions inspection with CEL on. Read posting about possible alternator as cause for P0340 and tried disconnecting battery feed to alternator after turning off CEL by pulling battery cable. CEL comes back on after shutting car off and restarting. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you changed the cam sensor and/or synchronizer yet? This may be the issue. Using a volt meter setting it to read AC volts you should see very little AC voltage from the alternator, less that 300mVAC or something.
