check engine light, please help!

i know i should take it to autozone for them to just take a look at. but before i do that, i wanna know if someone has had the problem i'm having, and what they had to replace. well a few minutes before the check engine light came on, i noticed it had a little hesitation at about 2000rpm. then when it came on i pulled over and shut off the engine. then after checking everything in the engine compartment which seems to look fine. i started it up and the light was still on, them when i started driving it it wouldn't let me push more than 1/3 of the accelerator, if i did the motor would just stall and slow down. but if i slowly gas it, it'll let me get up to speed. then when i try to floor it, it'll just stall and slown down like i said. it also had a bad smell coming from the exhaust after that happend. sorry so long but any help would be appreciated. oh and my truck is also a 91xl with a 5speed.

Sounds like maybe your Fuel pressure regulator has gotten stuck. You can sometimes test it with a fuel pressure guage.

Yes but the code(s) would not be for the FPR specifically. The very first thing you should do is have the codes read.

I had a Honda Passport that did the exact same thing. Mine always did it after it rained. When I took it to a tech, he recommended me to put new wires and plugs. Once the new wires were installed, never had a problem. Good Luck!
