I have a 98 explorer the check engine light has come on ,it codes p1405 which means auxilliary emission control mass air flow sensor. this sensor was actually buzzing low to high I took it off and put on a new one but the thing still has the engine light on. Do you have to reset the computer somehow if it reads auxilliary emission control maf sensor or will just eraseing codes do it? Am I endanger of engine cutting off at any time?

I would reset the computer by clearing the codes or pulling the battery terminals for a period of no less than 5 minutes.

Did you disconnect the battery to reset the computer?

From my understanding disconnecting the battery will deprogram the computer and make it run on the back up settings something Ford doesn"t want you to do. Seems like I have been told in the past Ford could only reset the vehicle computers with their shop computers to the original programs once some one removed a battery and let the computer erase, when you remove a battery you are supposed to hook a small 9 volt battery wired onto a cigarette plug and push it into the cigarrette lightrer to keep from erasing the memory.

Sorry, thats BS.

Many of us have reset our computers many, many times.

Like Al said, that's crap.

The settings stored will be erased when you disconnect the battery, but that's not a big deal. The PCM has the ability to relearn all the optimal settings for your vehicle. Just drive it around like you normally would and your X will be just fine.

My battery is out right now... :smoke:

With a new MAF, you definitley need to reset your computer.

Also, you might need to get the code cleared with a code reader or scanner. Its a good idea to anyway, make sure that the MAF was indeed the problem. Just because a code is thrown, doesn't mean the sensor is bad.
