Hello, I was looking for an answer about how checking automatic transmission fluid in the forum but, because of my poor english - I'm living in Italy-, I was not able to find it (excuse me...)
Ok, I bought an Explorer 4X4 (1993) with automatic transmission; unfortunatly there is no the owner's manual, so I can't find how check transmission fluid level and then, if it is low, how refill it -and also the spec of transmission fluid-.
P.S: if someone have a PDF of owner's manual...;) (I ask for it, but FORD Italia doesn't import it.....the FORD clerk ask me "What is an Explorer?" :().
Thanks for all

You check the auto transmission fluid with the dipstick located back near the firewall. The tranny needs to be warm before you check it. Wipe the dipstick off first before checking fluid to remove the possibility of a false reading by the sloshing of the fluid in the pan. If it is between the two holes on the end of the dipstick, you are fine. If under the bottom hole you need to add fluid, above the top hole you have overfilled it. You add the transmission fluid through the transmission dipstick tube. The transmission fluid is Mercon (Not Mercon V!!) although any universal fluid that says it is compatible with Ford vehicles that use Mercon will work.

My 2017 Explorer manual says to:

Check the fluid level with the engine running and the transmission in park (P).
Make sure that your vehicle is on level ground.
Rotate the automatic transmission fluid cap in a counterclockwise direction. See Under Hood Overview - 3.5L Duratec.
Remove the cap and dipstick and wipe it with a clean, lint-free cloth. Replace the cap and dipstick and remove it again to check the fluid level.

Can anyone verify that I am reading this instruction to mean that I DO NOT screw the cap back down to check the automatic transmission fluid level before removing the dipstick?

This thread is 15 years old

Our trucks don’t have a screw on cap
This thread is for a 1993 explorer
2017 is in a completely different part of the forum and does not have a dipstick

The 91-2004’trucks We simply have a dipstick
Nothing to rotate

Thank you for the help. I got to this section by typing in "automatic transmission fluid check", and I did not want to start a new thread, but I need to in this case. I will put this question in the 5th generation forum.
