I really have two questions here. On my explorer, on the bottom ( i guess you could call trim) there is what appears to be a chrome insert. I am not sure if this is factory or not as I bought it used from someone. First question would be obviously is it replaceable, and if so, how can I go about getting it new?

In its current state it is flaking and just looks junky.

Below is a pic, sorry if its too big or poor quality.

First of all, yes it is factory but unfortunetly it is moulded directly into the plastic so I'm pretty sure you cant replace just the chrome strip.

You do have a couple options, 1st would be obviusly go to Ford or LMC etc. and buy all new mouldings (very expensive) or what I've seen done is to cover the chrome strip with vinyl stripeing either 'Blackout Tape' or even another color. A friend of mine had a white and dk. grey Mustang with simular mouldings, he used red on his, looked pretty sharp.

You can even get chrome or brushed aluminum vinyl.

I really appreciate the response. I figured it was molded into it. Replacing it is more money than I care to spend honestly.

Thanks for the vinyl suggestion, I will look into it.
