Hi!
I have - once again - a new strange noise I cannot locate myself. I own an 1998 Explorer 4.0 SOHC 4WD and during the first 5 miles after a cold start I have a very strange clatter noise during strong acceleration (e.g. when I press down the accelerator pedal to overtake another car).

After about 5 miles the noise is completely gone - this makes it even harder to detect.

What can be the source of this noise?

Thanks for any advice.

Kind Regards,
Hans-Georg, Germany

(BTW: the camshaft tensioner recall is done)

I don't know guys. Could this be the oil sender lifting oil out of the oil pan? I'm not sure. Makes sense once the oil is through the whole crank case, that the noise would stop? Sorry I can't be more of a help.

Could this be a 01M01?

Take it to Ford if it is. The problem is covered under a Ford Extended warranty.

01M01 already done...

@sideswipe:
The cam tensioner has been repaired a few month ago on extended warranty. However, I will go to Ford with this noise.

00M12 is the cam tensioner and o-ring

01M01 is the timing chain.

correct me if I'm wrong guys....

Sorry, I think you are right and I was wrong!
Here in Germany there are other warranties. I hope they will cover this problem, too. I will contact my Ford dealer asap.
However, do you know, what might happen, if I do not fix this problem? Is it just a matter of noise or can something serious happen?
Kind Regards,
Hans-Georg

Well I can tell you what happened to me. Ford will be installing a new engine for me tomorrow morning.

I am sorry to hear that! Was the problem above the source of your engine failure? I hope they will install the engine free of charge, do they?

A combination of 00M12 and 01M01 issues caused irreparable engine damage. Ford is replacing the engine free of charge.

01M01 is for the cam chain guide, not the timing chain. Its warranty if for 7yr/100K.

00M12 is correct. Its warranty is for 6yr/72K.

Generator will be replaced

Hi!
Just a little update on my issue:
The Ford dealer found a problem which might be responsible for the clatter noise:
A bearing within the generator seems to be out of order. This problem results in vibrations of the generator and a clatter noise. A complete generator malfunction is imminent so the generator must be replaced in a few days.
However, it is difficult to say if the generator is responsible for the clatter noise I reported. Maybe this problem is still not solved. But obviously the generator must be replaced anyway.
I will keep you informed.

Generator was not the problem...

Hi!
Now, the generator is new, the money is gone but the clatter noise is still there...
I have to start all over again.
Kind Regards,
Hans-Georg

I am having the same problem with the rattling..Ford determined that it was the timing chain rubbing against the guides. They offered to replace them..but that involves taking the front and rear of the engine apart. My experiences with that dealer made me decide that I would live with the rattle...and just keep my foot off the gas.

eaton:

That timing chain issue may eventually lead to total engine failure. Thats according to the dealer.

Source of the noise still unclear

@sideswipe: What about your Explorer? Are you happy with your new engine?

The source of my clatter noise is still unclear. But there is a small success I can report: The engineers heard the noise during a test drive - this is the first step for the mystery to be solved. I will keep you informed.

Kind Regards,
Hans-Georg

I'm happy with the engine so far. I've only put a couple of hundred miles on it though. Seems to be better than before, but only time will tell. I'll keep you posted.

I have a '98 Ford Explorer XLT, 4.0L SOHC V6. When I start the engine during a cold start. The engine makes a clatter noise more or less as described in other messages here. After a few minutes driving, the noise goes away. To this day I have not been able to find the cause of this sound. I have a gas engine, but the sound makes it sound like starting up a diesel engine.

Probably the camshaft tensioners. When they go bad, they cause the deisel noise for the first couple of minutes. Do a search for 00M12 to find more information. If it was the camshaft guides, the noise doesn't go away after 5 minutes. That would be 01M01.

Problem still not solved

Hi!

The camshaft tensioner is new, the timing chain is new, the noise is still there after all :(

The dealer now belives the noise is comin from the ignition. Can this be possible?

Kind Regards,
Hans-Georg

What type of oil and oil filter are you using? 5W-30 is recommended and DO NOT use Fram filters if you are. (see Oil Filter study thread for reasons why)
