Clicking noise from motor.

I believe the noise is from the lifters, that is if the sohc 4.0 in the 2001 Sport has lifters. I cant figure this noise out, it is pissing me off. I hear it real bad when the motor first starts cold. When the motor gets up to temperature, it quiets down, but can still be heard. I want to fix the problem myself, instead of going to the dealer and being overcharged. Any ideas?
