I have a 96 exp and for some reason no matter what mode i put the selector on it ONLY throws air out thru the windshield. I could turn the selector and it doesnt even seem as if its going thru modes.
What could be causing this problem?
Could it be the actual climate control module?

The vacuum line that runs the mode door is broken. The line runs from the engine over to the passenger inner fender, then to the fire wall. Most common place for it to break is along the passenger inner fender.

Is there some sort of a diagram i could look at?
I thought it could have been the actual selector switch.

Just follow the vacuum lines from under the dash by the fuel pump inertia switch, out to the engine compartment, to the vacuum reservoir. You will find your leak. It can even be the reservoir itself.

Ok i am honestly confused. Sorry if i am just having a blond moment. But are you saying that a vacuum leak could be causing the climate control selector to not read whether or not its supposed to throw air thru the front vents, rear vents or windsheild? If thats the case cool, i just have never heard or a vacuum leak causing this problem. But then again this is the first time i own an explorer.

Thanks for your replies and i will see if i could find the problem your way as soon as i get a chance.

It is a vacuum system- look on the back of the selector- air lines run the mode door. When it's fixed and the truck is off, try turning the selector, you'll hear popping, air, and all sorts of cool stuff. :)

I had the same problem on my wife's '02 X. The vacuum line came loose from the reservoir behind the glove box. Air blowing out the defrost vents is the default position. Like everybody else said, follow your vacuum lines from the heater control all the way to the front. You'll probably find a loose/cracked vacuum line somewhere

Interesting. its the first time i hear of of the selector piece being ran on vacuum lines. I will look into it this weekend. Thanks guys.
Is there some sort of a diagram i could look at so i am not going in there blind???

The factory wiring diagram actually has the vacuum diagrams. 54-4. I am sure you can find them elsewhere if you do some looking. But you probably don't need the diagram in this case. Just follow all the lines and you are sure to find your leak. Once you lose vacuum to your system, it defaults to the defrosters.

Thanks a mil. So the place to start is under the hood.
