On Saturday I drove my explorer ('91 w/ 5spd) down I-81 about 215 miles. After filling up with gas before the trip, I did not stop until a rest area 135 miles down the road, driving 70-75 mph. So I go to pull into the rest area, step on the clutch and almost put a hole in the floor. Clutch doesn't disengage... Push it a few more ties and it feels like it should. Check fluid in master cylinder, it's ok...

Drive the rest of the trip and it does it again. Worst part was dealing with city traffic at the end without being able to shift gears...

Clutch isn't slipping at all. As soon as it gets warm down there, I can push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor, without resistance, and without the clutch disengaging at all. I got out of the truck and was able to push the pedal to the floor with one finger. I can pump it for a minute and it will build up enough pressure to disengage, but I have to pump it constantly.

Does this sound like a slave cylinder to anyone else? I have had them go bad in other trucks, but never like this, and no warning whatsoever.

Also, what replacement slaves do people favor?

Thanks for any help.

P.S. This happened on college move-in day, what a perfect time Dead Link Removed

It is not the Slave Cylinder it sound like the Ctuch Master cylinder it is the Part that goes through the Fire wall to the Pedal and pumps the fluid to the Slave cylinder... Mine when the same way with no warning... I drove down the and on the way back to my house I was going to stop at the audio store When I pressed the clutch to take it out of Gear the clutch had no pressure... The funny thing is I though it was the Slave cylinder too.. I dropped the Tranny replaced the Slave and it still did not work... My Navajo was on Jackstands for a week Till I figured it out...

Same thing happened to me... Had to change the clutch and figured I'd fix my soft pedal by replacing the slave while I had everything apart.

I was pretty disappointed when I put everything back together and still had a soft pedal.

Ah, well.

Have a master cylinder lying on my passenger side seat, been meaning to go in and change them out but have been too busy fixing other people's cars... Ha... the shoemaker's children walk barefoot!

You have just won our "oldest thread bump ever in the history of explorerforum" award. I have no idea what the prize is, but bravo to you for finding a thread that was posted when-

Well, you know... I do what I can :)

Just hate to see an old thread die and a bunch of new kids pop up everywhere! You lose the community knowledge that way!

Back to modern day... I am wishing to replace the slave cylinder in my 2005 ranger. Is it possible for one person to do this, and is it easy? According to the manual, and common sense, it doesn't look too complicated, but, I work wih people who can overcomplicate things, so.... throw me a bone, please! I'm on my way out to begin right now.

It's not complicated, I did mine, and I'm no mechanic. It's just kind of labor intensive, since you have to drop the trans. I highly suggest renting a transmission jack if you're doing it solo.

Gotta admit I'm glad he bumped this thread, or I would have been replacing a slave cylinder and being mighty poed haha.

The master cylinder seal cup can allow fluid to bypass itself, with no consequent leakage; the slave cannot respond to fluid pressure which isn't there. A failed slave invariably involves leakage.

It would be folly, I learned the hard way, to yank out the transmission for a clutch replace, leaving the slave alone. It started leaking after only a few weeks of new clutch use. Yank that ***** out again!! imp

Hey I just did a clutch asmbly/flywheel slave and master. I don't have a lift, well I did use a fork lift just to get the truck high enuf to pull the tranny out and roll it back under after pulling it apart for some sweet lovin. I did happen to find a rickty old what some time long ago was a tranny jack hidden away in a dark corner of the shop. Mines got 185K so I just decided to do all of it. Supper Slippage! Anyways I ran into a problem. Exhaust has to come out, to get trans out. I just cut my "pipes" and ordered a new set of headers and well the whole exhaust system. It was a rusty knuckle busting heap of twisted tetanus mess anyways.I don't know what your 05 is like, but pulling trans on your back under any car or truck is less than ideal. It can be done. Tranny jack is worth its weight in gold for this one.
Oh yeah, I was unable to get any where close to yankin the top 4 bolts on my trany from underneath, and finally found away up top side. I did them last and wish I had done them first, as I needed to get the motor n trans at a slight angel to reach back in the, and well with gravity made the last 2 very hard to get turning as ther was that added stress, so maybe start top side and work you way down?

Clutch Leaks

My 2000 ford explorer has had signs of slippage when driving at higher rpms for quite a while now. I knew that eventually i would have to replace the clutch because of this. Well, I waited two long and not i can no longer shift the car in or out of gear. From what i can tell it is probably the slave cylinder that needs replacement. Here is what i don't understand, if i top off my reservoir it will drain quickly out and leak out of the bottom of the car, between the transmission and the Oil Drain Bolt (I am not the most automotive savvy person hence poor terminology). Could this be a gasket or part of the clutch fluid line? Ive read it could be the master cylinder, but i believe that is located behind the clutch pedal and it would not make sense for fluid to be leaking so far away. I didn't notice any leaking from what i believe is the slave cylinder, does anyone have an idea of what i should look into replacing?

Crawl under there and look and you will see if it is coming from the line or something like that (very unlikely). Based on your description, and history of these slave cylinders, it is almost surely the slave cylinder. Pull out the rubber plug on the left side. If there is any wet in there, that confirms the slave cylinder. If fluid is coming out the bottom of the bell housing, that confirms the slave cylinder. If the seal in the slave is gone, the fluid will just push right put and the clutch won't release.
