Do any of you know if I can find a device to retreive codes from my 98 OBD II computer but also it must be useful for my 94 Explorer that has the previous generation computer(the one that you can get codes with a 40$ device or a voltmeter as I do now). My Escort poped the Service engine soon light but unless I have a specialised code reader (about 250$) I cannot get them. I dont want to get the car to a mechanic just for codes, I can do it myself but need advise on a GOOD/VERSATILE code reader, and cheap if possible.

check with autozone. Also they will read your codes and reset the computer, if needed, for free. I know they have a lot of code readers for fords.

They are OBD-1 and 2 compatible and pretty versitile with lots of diffrent scanning options beyond just reading codes. The base unit that I got was like $150 give or take, got it at an autozone/pep boys/ shchuckts clone. You but the wires seperatly for the veichile types that you need. Or you can buy EVERY wire with the unit for $400 some odd dollers if you feel that you need to be able to diagnose every computer engine know to man. Oh and the prices seemed quite a bit higher on the web site then in the store.

Yeah, I paid about $350 for my AutoXray Pro-Pac at Checker Auto Parts. That was the only way they sold it when I bought it 1 1/2 years ago.
