Cold Air Intake (CAI) Discussion

I just called Airaid and K&N and neither of these manufacture have a CAI specific for the Explorer Sport yet.

Yes, I've read through this thread and see that the SHO Taurus and Flew CAI's will adapt to the XSport, but us Folks here in California need a CARB (smog) approved CAI specific to the XSport for it to be legal and pass the visual inspection; I'm sure it would pass the sniffer, but that's not the issue...

Just talked to Injen and they now have a part number for their CAI for our XSports, it's #PS9005; they are working on the CARB approval, once approved, the CARB sticker can be gotten from Injen if you buy the CAI now. I've emailed a distributor to get pricing on this Injen CAI.

an aftermarket CAI is beneficial to most vehicles, especially forced induction vehicles. looking at the design of the stock air intake system on the Sport, it seems as though the engineers were going for "quietness".

myself, I wouldn't put any CAI on a car that didn't have a specific model number (ie, not putting a SHO CAI on Explorer Sport) -- of course in California you can't do this and have it emissions legal... but more importantly have an engine issue that the warranty won't cover because of an aftermarket part not "specifically" designed for use on the Sport installed.

I'll wait til an Explorer Sport specific CAI is available then I'll install it

I put CAI on everything I own btw. The biggest difference I felt was on my 04 GTO...the stock airbox was equivalent to sucking air through a straw

Injen has one specific to the Sport. For a dealer to void a warranty they would have to directly relate the add on part or mod specific to the warranty claim.

All kits include a heat shield that seals against the hood and isolates the filter from engine heat, or the Injen Powerflow Box. The Powerflow Box incorporates an EA

Yes. That was the prototype. They were just getting the intake fitted. I have the question in to them. Will get an answer back shortly.

And the K&N keeps in the fender like the stock one?

So which one provides the best performance on the dyno?

Yes that is correct. It's a ram intake. Not sure what filter you are talking about in the fender CobraJohn..... There is an air dam underneath the vehicle to direct air to the engine compartment. I could be wrong but I don't think there's a filter down there. It's just to direct air into the compartment. Any info on this that anyone might have would be helpful. Thanks.

I thought the K&N filter was fitted into the fender.....I'm now assuming it is not.

I must have looked at the K&N pic wrong.

The K&N probably does go in around the fender if it is a CAI. That's where they should be installed. My question was in regards to this comment

I think the stock one is NOT installed in the fender. However, I've been wrong many times. I thought the stock one was located on the drivers side of the engine compartment towards the front up around the battery.

Directly Beneath this area I beleive there is an air dam that carries fresh air into the engine compartment. This is why the heat shield is very beneficial and makes the ram more of a CAI......

Take a look at this. He refers to the last one as a CAI. Same as the short ram. However the heat shield creates an area under the hood that uses cold air..... Look familiar. Both provide minimal gains in HP. However the location of the filter intake and the heat shield may classify the Injen as a CAI. I'm from Canada so any intake is a cold air intake for 9 months of the year.. LOL

This is a short ram as well. As you can see it is in the area of the engine compartment that gets fed cold air. Doesn't go in the fender well. Not sure I like the makeshift heat shield either. I will take pics once I have my Injen installed. I am also going to crawl under to confirm the scoop for fresh air.

I know what he said... and disagree with him. if it is not drawing air directly from the outside it is not a cai... just an sri with a shield

K&N Cold Air Intake for the 2013 Sport

I'm taking delivery today on the new '13 Sport I ordered about 6 weeks ago. Until I checked today, K&N wasn't "officially" offering a CAI for the Sport, but guess what, now they are!
