computer dash light on

The engine computer fault dash light has come on in my year 2000 XLT. The idle is erratic and I suspect its because the mixture is a bit rich. Would this cause the fault light? Apart from this the car runs fine.
The question is can the mixture be reset or is it pre set by the computer?
Or is there a serious fault with the computer?

Has anyone else had this problem?
