I need to replace my fan clutch on my 93XL. It says it has a right hand thread on the shrowd, and seems to rotate counter clockwise when I am facing the engine compartment from the front of the truck.

I think I am over thinking this but... the fan clutches in my area are $110. The one on the JC Whitney website is half of that.
But the add confuses me. It says--

STANDARD-DUTY TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED FAN CLUTCH
Fits: 1993 Ford Explorer

For cars, pickups and vans with standard-rotation (rotates clockwise as you face it) fan or reverse-rotation face (rotates counter clockwise
)

So as you guys understand it, is this clutch is the one I need? I don't get the or part in their description. Does it spin both ways?

I know my head is definatley spinning right now. Like I said, I am probably overthinking this, but I don't want to buy the wrong one. I just didn't know they could spin either way.

I can see how you are confused by that description of the rotation. Frankly, I don't know what they are talking about either. However, I do know a lot about changing my fan clutch, as I am on my third one, and on my fourth fan blade.

I know you did not ask this question, but I would not buy one from JC Whitney. RockAuto has one for $57.89 (Four Seasons), and a MotorCraft model for $82.79, which is a very good price. If you have never done this job before, you must have a fan clutch tool in order to remove the clutch from the water pump housing. (You might need a new blade as well, check for cracks.) With the correct tool, it's an easy job...without it, it's virtually impossible.

For a detailed description of how to change the fan and/or clutch, see this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219326

Good Luck!:us:

Thanks for the great info.

I have changed it once before, but like I said the price is a stinkin $110 locally. Last time I bought one, I just said I need a new fan clutch, and just got what I got. So I figured I would try the interweb for a cheaper price, and that just got me all confused.

I'll definatley check your suggestions.

Hayden is the brand you want. Normally I'd say go with a "sever duty" clutch, but from what I know about geogrophy (not much) I don't think your truck sees much 100F+ temps..

If you indeed don't see those extreme temps I'd go with a "Heavy Duty" fan clutch from hayden at the most.

The different duty clutches spin at differenct % of the shaft speed.. The higher the percentage the more air it pulls which means the more mileage you can loose.
The fans engage at 170F temp (thats 170F air temp at the clutch).

Here is the info about the clutches.. I got this from a Hayden catalog.
Standard duty thermal clutch..
60%-70% when engaged (hot)
20%-30% when disengaged

Heavy Duty
70%-90% when engaged
25%-35% when disengaged

Severe Duty
80%-90% when engaged
20%-30% when disengaged.

my fan is totally cracked up. im just planning on installing a electric fan. seems to be the hardest part is going to wire up the thermo valve to cntrol when it kicks on.

from seeing how much of an issue the fan is with some of you. im shocked more havent done it? just the drag alone, will give a bit of a gas mileage gain. thats my big intrest. plus to free up some more room in the engine bay.

The issue is space and radiator size. On a 1st Gen X there isn't much room between the water pump and the radiator... Also, a few people have tried the Black magic fan on 1st Gen x's and it couldn't keep up. Others (like Aldive) have it on a 4.0 sohc and it works fine there..

Here is some info/pics of when I put an electric fan on a friends f-150

Installed my new fan clutch today. Thanks for all your info.
Went pretty well, except for the fact that the old bolts from the old fan clutch didn't have same threads as new clutch, and none came with the new one. But a trip to NAPA and 97 cents later, the job was done.

Once again thanks for the info and links!!
