Here's my problem. I have a clunknig noise coming from the front end, sounds like the left side. It changes with speed and somedays sounds worse than others. I think it may be a bearing but the bearings cost anywhere from $165 up to over $200 dollars depending on what kind of warranty I want. So I figure I better be 100% sure of what it is before I change this thing. I plan on getting under there and taking a look but if anybody has some suggestions of what to look at or ideas what it could be I'm all ears. Oh, by the way, there is no change in the noise when turning or hitting bumps, 4WD on or off. Thank you.

If it was a clicking and not a clunking.. I was gonna say CV. But CVs are usually loud at slow speeds and when turning. Bearings is my next suggestion :D

I've had a bad CV joint on other vehicle and definitely does not sound like that. I describe it as clunking i guess for lack of a better word. It only occasionally sounds heavier like a clunk, mostly it sounds more like a rubbing bump if that makes sense. Not really a clunking or clicking. Thanks.

Clicking or Ticking?

Maybe a crack in the Manifolds??? When you press on the gas hard, does it get louder?

No, doesn't sound like a cracked head either. It varies speed with tire speed but not engine speed, and I'm pretty sure I can feel slight vibration in the steering wheel and peddles.

When I say, Manifold... I mean Exhaust manifold.(headers) Just wanted to be clear on this.

You have a bad hub, they are around $230 and you can only get it from Ford. Takes about a hour to replace with simple sockets.

I've already replaced both sides on mine and it sounded like a rubbing worn out brake pad sound when they started to go.

Like 2001ExpSport said I think it is the hub. I had the same kinda noise on my 91X and it was the hub that was the problem.

Good Luck
Tom

I am having the same problem, but the clicking stops when I apply the brakes (even if the wheel is still moving)... When I take my foot off of the brake pedal, it starts again. I just had my bearings repacked about 1000 miles ago, and I know my hubs are fine (but I have a '94, so that probably doesn't mean anything concerning your model). I am going to take it to a shop and see if they can figure anything out.

Sounds like your anti-rattle clips are rattling. Were the pads put on correctly?

You are the second person who has told me that... I am definitely going to have the shop check that out when I take it in. Another shop told me I need brand new pads, etc., but I just had them replaced about 6,000 miles ago and I do mostly highway driving.

I had a similar problem, was a bad shock for me.

Had similar issue rubber sounding 0on turns it was hub
