Hey guys,

I loose coolant from this thing from time to time In fact, I made a thread about it not too long ago, except, at the time I made the thread, I didn't know where the coolant was coming from. The intent of the thread was to find out where it was coming out from.

Anyway, I occasionally loose coolant out of here. It happened today, not a lot but some. I am not concerned; initially I was told lower intake manifold gaskets were bad.

So what's happening here? Why does it happen and is it the sign of a problem?

Thanks

Are you loosing coolant from the top of the reservoir, or from a crack in the side of it? If loosing from the top, then I would suspect you are either overfilling it, or you have a head gasket, cracked head/block problem.

Maybe that valve off the heater core hose that has a vacuum line going to it?

Guys,

It's the two rubber hoses the leave the fire wall on the passenger side... and then it comes to this .... an adapter, which splits in to other rubber hoses going in several other directions.

Attached to the adapter, there is a metal pin the protrudes in the direction of the drivers side. Coolant drips from the very tip of this pin and down. I recently replaced my starter, and noticed there was a droplet of coolant on the end of the oil filter. This lies directly underneath the area where droplets of coolant leak from the location described above.

97 OHV btw...

Thanks

Reminder: it's doesn't always leak, it's not even an issue really, just want to know what's going on that's all...

That's the part!

But only coolant flows through this part, correct?

Can anyone explain why it only sometimes leak? The last time it did was a couple of days ago when I replaced my starter; upon initial start up, I had to do a lot of extra cranking, and during that cranking, it leak from this heat controller valve. But during regular operation, it won't leak 99 times out of 100.

Thanks

Not sure why, but lots of people here have had the same issue.

That valve is supposed to shut off coolant flow to the heater core when you switch to max air conditioning. I guess the bladder in it starts to crack. Just guessing though.

happens this time of year when people start to turn their heat on and find a new leak.

this is actually the first part i replaced on my explorer when i bought it (used). i basically stole it from the previous owner because of an mysterious coolant leak. turned out to be this $20 dollar part.

very easy repair, it's at the top of the engine, and only requires plyers to free the clamps. you will loose a little bit of cooland so stuff some rags under the valve befroe you remove it so you dont make a mess.

Great info! That's what I was looking for. So it's as easy taking it out with plyers and replacing it with the new unit?

And just one more thing... only coolant is flows through this thing, right?

Thanks
