Its looking like I may need to replace rotors on my Explorer and definitely it needs new pads.

I've been to 3 auto parts stores and gotten 3 different answers as to what rotors are supposed to go on my rig. I'm sure one of them is correct but without removing the rotor and taking it down to match it; I have no idea what is correct now.

Anyway, I could use some help with it. I know someone will have the right knowledge here.

I also would like to know what kind of pads/brands I should get. Most of it's mileage is city driving. And I'm pretty light on the brakes for the most part. I don't barrel up to to a light and put the hurt on the brakes. But I want stopping power if I need to stop fast.

Below is all the information I can think of on my Explorer that might be needed.

Year: 2000
Model: 2 Door Sport
Engine: 4.0L SOHC w/ Automatic
Drive: 4x4
Axle: 4.10
Wheels: Stock 16" option.
Front and Rear Discs
ABS System
It has the towing package I believe because it has the trans and PS cooler on it.

If anyone can tell me the correct rotors and suggest a good type and brand of pads to get I'd be most appreciative. :):us:

i looked on the RockAuto site to see what rotors are listed for which applications. i don't even see the Sport listed. i do see listings for Eddie Bauer/XLS/XLT/Postal but nothing specifically for the Sport or Sport Trac.

If i were you, i'd take your old rotor with you to the parts store to make sure you get the right one the first time. ditto the pads. as far as which pads you should buy, plan on spending a minimum of about $30 for OK pads. i would recommend stepping up to the next higher grade, but that depends on your budget. don't forget to clean your new rotor's with brake cleaner before installing them. clean, inspect and lube your slides with hi-temp brake grease and i like to put sticky stuff on the back of the pads to prevent brake sqeak.

I ordered rotors and pads from Rock Auto. I got the Raybestos severe duty of both. They were listed for the Sport Trac. I believe the Sport is identical. Working great. I'm on my phone so links are kinda difficult. I think I put part numbers in my thread "Offtrac's New Purchases."

Whoa back up

Sport tracs ( and later rangers) have larger rotors, and different knuckles.

When you ask for "sport" rotors I think the parts guys is getting mixed up with "sport trac".

I do not think the "sport" has the larger "ranger-sport trac " rotors.

The pads and calipers are the same, the difference is where the caliper mounts to the knuckle, and, the rotor size. Measure you current rotor, and we can get you the correct answer.

Another way to check, show us a picture of the inside of the wheel, showing the clearance between the caliper and wheel. Since you have 16" wheels there should be over 1" of space between the caliper and inside wheel rim, if I am correct.

Oops, sorry for the misinformation. That's why I qualified with "I believe." I was under the impression the Sport and ST were the same everything in the front. Disregard and continue on. I apologize.

Thanks for all the responses to help sort this out! I didn't expect them so fast. :)

OK, I took some pictures of the rotors best I could. It looks like they are just under an inch away from the wheel from the calipers this is for both front and rear. I couldn't remove the wheels to measure to rotors. I have to do that at another place. And I need to order parts beforehand because I don't have another rig to use while this one is down for repair. Hence I can't take the rotors or pads down to match them.

But I did take the following measurements.

Measurement from the outside of the hub to the edge of the rotor. (the riding surface for the pads).
Front: 2 5/16"
Rear: 1 11/16"

As for pads I'm fine with spending $30-60+ per pair. Its not worth going cheap for something that can save your life.

Its a Sport (I attached a pic of mine below) not a Sport Trac. Maybe that did confuse the parts guy at the store. But I thought Sport Tracs came out in 2001.

Usually when I am not sure, I go on Motorcraft site, input the VIN (actually I have it saved there) and look for the part number.
Then I compare with what I get on RockAuto, Amazon, Advance Auto Parts.

just go to autozone ,they only show 2 different kind ....the better kind and the cheaper kind .
kinda hard to mess that up .and get you some lifetime pads,i cant remember how many free pads i have gotten over the last 11 years .well worth a couple bucks extra.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I ordered something from Auto Zone and thought they couldn't screw it up but they did.
