I have been reading quite a bit on 5.0L's being swapped over into 4.0 Explorer's. So I have never done an engine swap but would consider pulling the 5.0L if its still in the donor, and such and maybe leave the wiring to a mechanic....

So what I'm wondering is how much does it cost for:

- A complete swap over
OR
-Try to tackle most myself and leave more difficult tasks to a shop

I appreciate any insight, here's a couple pictures, I plan to lift it in the spring and some bigger tires

i'd say too much (and a ton of work) unless you've got a donor vehicle lying around. still, it can be done and would make your a fun ride.

things that come to mind... engine, transmission, t-case, radiator, wiring, ECU, fuel pump (maybe), exhaust system, engine & trans mounts, drive shafts (maybe) plus a bunch of little pieces unique to the V8. i think a V8 donor vehicle is a must to keep the costs down and do you plan on swapping in the AWD t-case, or you you want to go with a manual BW4406 t-case out of an F150? how are your fabrication skills?

If you pay a shop to do it it will be very expensive! I bought a wrecked mounty and did the whole job myself. I got the donor truck for less then 500$ and only had to buy a few gaskets. I also sold the stock 4.0 sohc and drivetrain for 700$ so I actually made money! If you use a donor the job is pretty straight forward as long as they are the same year truck. It is a lot of work thou and I spent almost 2 months doing mine after work and a few hours here and there.

Agree, if you have the donor and ability to do it yourself and have the time then it MAY be worthwhile. Definitely a foolish way to waste money if you need to farm it out, considering you can buy a clean 5.0 AWD for under $1500 (at least around these parts).

Okay, thanks for such quick replies... I need it throughout the winter, so I won't be thinking about it until Spring/summer. I like modding my vehicles with after market parts etc. But I would only be capable to tackle so much on this project more than likely...

I couldn't find a 5.0 for sale at the time I purchased mine last year. It is VERY clean all around and has a new paint job to boot.

As much as I want an 8-cylinder, what about adding a 'Power-adder' ? I think I need new plugs or something because I'm only getting 200kms/tank at the MOST, which is truly awful. I hear they were bad, but I can watch the gauge move, lol. Probably being a wimp bc I'm used to my 800-950kms/tank in my new Dart :)

Jealous of you 5.0 owners O_o

like most have said. find a donor. i spent 4 years trying to find mine. and when i did, i had to drive 5 hours one way to tow it home. i was able to sell the tires and rims from it, and almost got all the money back from it. when i was done with it, i took the shell to work (scrap yard) and got $300 for it, and also sold a few other parts from it.
however, i did rip into the motor to make sure everything was good, replaced a few parts (oil pump, timing chain, water pump, and had the heads looked over) just because it was out in the open, and didnt want to have to pull it all apart when it was together.
it also depends on if you want to mess with anything before you stab it back in. i put headers on it, ported the heads and intake, and added a 87-93 mustang cam to it as well. also, i did the 4406 swap, which ment i had to get a different case, and get a rear drive shaft made. also, if you are going to do a case swap, and want to lift it later on, you will need to redo the rear shaft, because it will be to short vs. stock.
im not trying to scare you from it. if you want to do a simple swap, and if your smart about it, you will come out in the end (hell, i even sold the old trans to a guy i work with, and the motor ended up in a truck i bought and sold because it needed a motor).
as for wiring, there are only a couple of wires (alt, ac, and oil pressure) that will need to be changed. if you look on my registry, i have listed the ones you need to change.
start to finish, it took me 2 weeks to do. that is also taking in consideration i couldnt do anything for 2 days because i was waiting for my case and drive shafts to be done, and i also screwed my back up royally haft way into it. but i did everything on a lift.
it really isnt to hard to do. if you can pull a motor out of one of these trucks, you have won haft the battle.
also, josh and i have seen both of our trucks in person. :D

Yea dont do what I did, get a complete donor

A donor truck with keys is what you need unless you want to pay to have the pats reprogrammed.

I bought a complete donor, did all the work myself, sold off everything I didn't need and had money left over with all the costs covered... it's easy
