My 98 Mountaineer cruise-control and "O/D off" stopped working at the same time. Sounds like they're connected in some way.

When the C-C is turned on, I try to "set" speed....I can see the indicator light flash on when I hit "set", but it won't stay on.

The "O/D off" switch at the end of the shift lever will not work at all. No "O/D Off" indicator comes on, and no shifting of the transmission takes place.

I think these two switches are sending the info ok, but not receiving confirmation from anywhere.

Anyone experienced this before?

Thanks,

Ron Evans

1st i would check all fuses.
2nd.) im not totally sure, as am relatively new to 2nd gens, but I believe there is a GEM device on board that has a recall on it. It causes all kinds of whack stuff to go wrong. Someone else back me/smack me on this.

On the Cruise Control problem: check your brake on-off switch (aka BOO). If this is sending a signal to the Speed Control Module, this could be causing the problem. The BOO switch is located on/near the brake pedal.

The GEM doesn't appear to have any interaction with the speed control; the Speed Control/ Servo Amplifier (under the hood on pass side fender) has the electronics integrated into it.

The PCM ( Powertrain Control Module aka computer) controls the OD On/Off light directly. The transmission control also uses the BOO, so maybe this is somehow causing the problem with the OD light???

If you want, I can attempt to email a copy of the 97 schematic for the Cruise Control and the Trans Control circuits.

Thanks for the info....

I did check all fuses, and they appeared to be ok...will check again, and check the BOO switch.

Dogfriend, you needn't send the schematics as I will determine the problem but have the dealer fix it..but thanks!
