Crunching sound/feel under brake pedal

Sorry if this was already mentioned - I searched but couldn't find it...

Anyway, for 6 months now or so when I step on the brake, I feel and hear like a crunching or severe rubbing sound on my 99 Sport. Sometimes it's worse than others. Like when it's humid out it's really bad.

I brought it to the dealer and they told me that they are having the same issue on some Taurus's and that in 50% of the cases replacing the brake booster fixed the problem. They told me that it doesn't interfere with the braking mechanism and the tech said he has a Taurus with the same problem and won't fix it until he knows for sure what it was.

Bottom line is I decided not to replace the brake booster because I didn't want to throw away $300. I'm vigilant about keeping it maintained and I hate to have this issue unresovled.

If the booster is the problem you should be able to get the noise if you step on the brakes while the truck is stopped - if the noise only happens while moving, then it would be something else.

I think the dealership should be able to give you better than 50/50 odds the 300 repair will work after you paid them to diagnose the issue - I would like to know what they have to do to fix the noise in the other 50% of cases.

The humidity thing is odd - that really shouldn't have an affect on a brake booster. But maybe someone else will chime in here and confirm they had the same problem.....

Now it gets weirder (is that a word?) Yes, it used to do it even when the truck was stopped.

But now - since I got it back it doesn't do it at all!!! SSSSHHH Don't jinx it and make it come back!!
