Curiosity: Cash for clunkers undo

he should just build a 347 stroker from the ground up with her money, pull the front driveshaft and just light the tires up in front of her new residence.
This isnt about having a more powerful engine or going faster - it "is a matter of principle."

I believe the dealer shredded the paperwork in lou of a $4500 payment.

Rebuilding that block could be hellish. Like it has been said, that would be a complete rebuild with extensive machining. The crank is probably fubared, cylinders, push rods, lifters, valves, heads, cam(s) are probably junk or will need a LOT of love. Just getting the engine dissassembled for rebuild is gonna suck. They basically replace the engine oil with a sodium silicate solution so it is gonna be everywhere the oil was. I can't even begin to imagine how bad the damage to the internals is going to be. You'd probably do less damage running the engine with no oil until it seized.

What kinda car was his "baby"? That seriously sucks!!!

I wouldn't rebuild it.
You can never know if all the silicate has been completely washed out of all the oil passages and nooks and crannies in the motor. If the slightest trace is left behind, the motor will be worn out before it's even broken in.
Buy an entire new engine and sleep well at night.

for me, principle would be using her money to build something better than what she destroyed. What better way to show her up then to upgrade.

That's just me though.

It might more than the engine.

The local Ford Dealer that participated in the clunker program told us they also put the silicate crap into the transmission too. I don't know if that's a requirement or just something they are doing? I wanted to buy an Eddie Bauer V8 Explorer they received on the clunker program but they insist they can't sell it to me. It's in excellent condition, nearly perfect body, Ford alloy wheels, perfect tan leather interior and the tires look new. I don't have any idea why it got clunked?

yeah that's part of the clunker deal, the vehicle can't go back on the roads.

if you ask me, cash for clunkers was the holocaust for american vehicles. And all it's going to do is put americans into debt because nobody can make there $500 a month car payment. its stupid and was completely unnecesary. I understand the car economy needed a boost, but it was the american car companies that needed it, not toyota and there stupid little hybrids.
And by destroying the engine, now thats just a waste. there was a video on youtube of a 94 explorer with like 421k miles, and it shows them murdering it, what the hell did that motor ever do wrong besides run strong everyday of its life?
screw obama

I didnt think explorers are/were/will ever be collectable, aside from special svt or salleens. The numbers matching thing probly doesn't mean anything on an explorer. if he can tell for sure the tranny isnt fubared, a new crate motor would be best all around. A new motor, with a warranty, even if the numbers dont match, the explorer with its minimal miles is still worth hardley anything as far trade in or resale value. Mostly due to the populations newfound green-faced hatred for SUVs.

Haven't you figured out that the government takes care of big business before it takes care of the people.

yeah you cant get the truck back. The only way you would be able to get your "clunker" back is if there was an unwind deal. (Bank or credit union decided not to give you the loan after all) And even then it will probably have some new dents and sctratches on it. I work at a toyota dealer and everyone I work with runs them into eachother. There are some very nice explorer's out there.

A friend of mine who is going thru a diviorce, his wife traded in his "baby" for cars for clunkers. The engine has been seized and is working on buying it back from the dealer..he is going after his wife for the price and whatever it will cost to rebuild the motor to keep the number(s) matching. (as opposed to a crate motor)

If your friends name is on the title and his name only, I am quite sure her ass is up a river without a paddle.
29K miles !!!!!!!!
We all have our "specific" name for his wife and all of them fit. I can not type the word I would call her in this thread but you should contact your friend and find out about the title situation.
It is not right for her to plank her ass down and drive a vehicle with 29K miles to a dealership and receive $4500.00 through cash for clunkers toward a new vehicle.
The salesman must have been a wacko too...to see 29K on the odometer and have the engine toasted!! I think some pretty underhanded B.S. is going on....the engine still just might be fine and the dealership is just waiting for this whole cash for clunkers deal blows over and forgotten about. Then suddenly they wonder.. where did this vehicle with 29K miles on it come from!!! The salesman probably put his own $4500.00 to cover things up. What a deal he got for $4500.00 plus the commission he made on the new vehicle sale!
I am getting all fired up here banging on the keyboard...I hope they rake her ass over the coals. She is probably giving the salesman private "flute" lessons. Something is absolutely strange going on.

engine rebuilder says $8500 to start, going to just salvage the bare heads and block replace everything else. (lots of labor cleaning it up if it can be)

1998 Explorer 5L with 29K miles.

lawyer says that it will be just taken out of her portion....

sure he could just go with a new engine, but it is a matter of principle.

Fair market value is all the court will require her to pay. It's always the lower of replacement value or repair cost in the eyes of the court. If she turned it into the "clunkers" program all he can do is purchase the vehicle from the dealer as "scrap." Once you turn something in to the Govt it's gone, even if you have legal standing you can only seek recourse thru the wife.

Also the dealership wouldn't have taken the vehicle on trade if his name was on the title, unless she had a valid P.O.A. If she had a power of attorney he's up poop creek.

*Edit* I forgot to comment on the question. I don't think I would mess with rebuilding the engine. The damage caused by the Sodium Silicate goes beyond just causing parts to wear, it's my understanding that it solidifys after the engine has cooled permantly filling areas with a glass like substance. The only way to get the vehicle back is to buy it from a salvage yard that purchases it from the dealer. In this case it will have a salvage title and will be pretty much worthless anyway, so throwing a crate motor in it won't hurt the value of it.

women like this one,
cant
understand
normal
thinking,

The salesman doesn't care they just want the comission. And honestly an explorer even with that low of mileage isn't worth much more than that.

Exactly...even with 29k miles, it simply wouldnt be worth much more.

This.

Assuming its an XLT with the mach sound system, dual power seats, leather, moon roof, and running boards in excellent condition KBB only has it at $3,725 trade in value.

sodium silicate is
Liquid Glass

Haven't you figured out that the government takes care of big business before it takes care of the people.

Don't people need jobs? To a point what's good for big business is good for the people. To a point... I believe businesses need to be regulated to ensure they do "the right thing". Left on their own they would probably be happy with slave labor, child labor and all that they were able to get away with before our nation stood up to them in the early 20th century.
