The process was a bit confusing @ first but I figured it out & on my test em i ripped the plastic a little. All in all a neat trick!

I'm thinking about doing mine today do you think red letters with a black background would look good?

I like the metallic ones without the trade mark Blue backdrop.

I did this and... ruined both my emblems :D I suck :(

So how do you get them off the back hatch of a 97...? is it inset and have tabs or just adhesived? I figured I'd ask again in case I'm missing something.

Ryans1-GT: Custom colored Ford Emblem can be designed by either a number plate maker or if you are good in designing and want to display some creativity can try out your own designs.....

Working on it right now

Hey guys, thanks for all the info. this was actually really easy on my 02. used a hair dryer for 5 minutes and black spray paint.

its actually drying right now, we'll see what it looks like when complete.

im gonna visit the JY and try to pick up a few more emblems to try this on.

has anyone thought of using vht tail light tint to do this

It would be the same as using black paint...

I am doing mine with little rhinestones in black.

I boiled mine in water for a couple minutes and it came off really easy. (easier than with a hair dryer)

The only thing is when i peeled mine it broke so have to get a clear epoxy to fill mine. (envirotex i heard works well)

So i hope this helps the people who's brake when they peel them.

I'll let everybody know how they turn out with the rhinestones!

I can't wait!!!

Epic Fail for my '02 Explorer

This did NOT work for me!! I was able to remove the front emblem using a heat gun and a screwdriver. After a few minutes of heating the adhesive softened and the emblem came off the truck pretty easily.

Then I put on my old man glasses and looked for the "seam" that would show me where to pry off the next section.....well never found it. I heated the sh*t out of the emblem (this is a heat gun, not a hair dryer) and it softened up nicely, I was able to put a blade in there and pry etc but this was not coming apart in any form that would let it go back together normally. I was mostly melting it and I think the blade was going into the softened plastic. In the lower corner of the top photo you can see where the blade was eating up the corner and plastic...not good. Then the plastic began to de-laminate.

I have an '02 and my emblems may be different? they are 5.75", standard Ford blue? My truck comes from Kentucky according to the label. Maybe different years and different trucks have different type emblems.

I attached photos of my front emblem and you can see where the boxcutter blade was cutting into the softened plastic but I found NO seam. Oh and ironically I took this off in order to paint it black and in this freaking photo it looks black just like I wanted! Except now I only have a f**ked up blue one! Sweet fancy Moses!

There is a LOT of confusion on this thread and lots of failed attempts....I think these emblems are NOT all created equal.

Good luck to those who succeed this, I will now have to buy or salvage another for the front.

I also have a 02 and it worked perfectly fine. keep in mind your peeling a clear rubber face off of a silver plastic piece. once it's warm enough, the clear rubber piece should just come off. and that's gonna be the piece that you'll sand the color off of and paint black.

I did this to both if my emblems, using spraypaint for one and a black permanent marker on the other. The market was easier to use and looks exactly the same.

LuigiEnVivo,
Did you have a seam? A readily apparent seam? Some photos show a seam, others it is hard if not impossible to see. I heated my emblem a loooong time and once it was soft I was able to "pierce" the soft rubber/plastic. If you look close you will see the corner where I marred the chrome, and the clear rubber was tearing or ripping. Did you have any of these types of effect on yours?

I didn't heat my emblem. I used a small slot screwdriver for glasses to pry the edge just enough to get two bigger screwdrivers under there. Slowly work the two screwdrivers along until the emblem peels off. You could mask the edge to minimize damage.
I might have a spare that i could send you, but probably don't have time to paint it.

Sean99,
real kind of you to offer but I'll play around with this and figure it out. I'm already playing with the old one and have blacked it out and looking to put something personal on the front now....again thanks for the offer.

almost

so bu the looks of it, your almost there.

you actually want to put the screwdriver on the insde of THAT lip that you scruffed. think of that little silver lip as the final border between the plastic/rubber and the silver plastic.

Luigi,
thanks for the follow up. I used a box cutter and the blade could have been part of my undoing. The blade seemed to cut rather than separate, I could not find a seam for the screwdriver so I used something thinner (a blade). So with your sweet little red arrow, I will scoop up some of these at a junkyard and try again. I will heat more, use flat blades to "lift" and see what happens.

Thanks

Is this the method for the front or rear emblem? I've got an '03 xlt explorer. And im just starting to make it the way i want. Just bought it a month or so ago. I'm painting the grill black, and want to black out the emblem to. Found how to get the front off. Iffy to say the least on the back. Don't know if its glued on, or what.

I was having issues with the back emblem too, so i just backed into my garage and hooked up a blow dryer to an extension cord. i just pointed the blow dryer at the emblem until i felt it soften up, and took a screwdriver to it.
