I am trying to do the intake made by this ranger guy here for my '96 ohv and im having problems. I think mine might be set up different than his 97 ranger 4.0 ohv. take a look at the webpage

I don't recommend doing this mod. Too many chances for it to go horribly wrong.

could i just take the piece that the filter sits in off, so at least the filter is allowed to suck in more air, would that make a difference

I did basically the same thing with my '93 and I've had no problems. I use those same couplers from Home Depot and I was able to clamp them down hard enough so there where no gaps. Check out the pics on my page (ditchdigger.tk). EliteConcept did the same thing, I got the idea from him.

The '95 and '96 filter/MAF housings are completely different from all other years. espn, don't try it is all I can say.

I am the guy with the ranger that the guy who started the thread is talking about. I don't see why you have a problem with my intake. Are you just saying not to do it because the MAF's are different between the Rangers and Exploders? You say that their is way too many chances for something bad to happen? How do you figure this? I've gone over 3 months with it and have had absolutely no problems! Performance has increased greatly over stock and my mpg has also increased healthily.

Apparently Duke16 and EliteConcept has also completed this same modification with no problems. The thing is on their ridiculously tight, their are no gaps. However, say that their was a slight gap in between the MAF and the rubber coupler. Would this necessarily have any negative effect? The air would still be being metered by the MAF sensor, so unmetered airflow wouldn't be a problem. I guess that the air coming in through those gaps could be slightly dirty, but when adequately tightened the rubber sort of conforms to the outline of the MAF, thus leaving no room for air to creep in. I'll try starting my truck tomorrow and feeling if air is being sucked in in between the MAF and rubber coupler. Other than that I can think of no problems. Their is no gap in betweent the rubber coupler and intake tube, so that wouldn't be a problem. Also, their is a tight seal in between the filter and MAF.

His '96 Explorer intake and your '97 Ranger intake are completely different.
Your intake, obviously, has the MAF as a seperate piece that sets in between the filter housing and the intake tube. The same set up as all Explorers except the '95 and '96 models.
The '95-96 models MAFs are built into the plastic housing that holds the air filter. It will not work on his application.

Ok, well besides the fact that it won't work for this guys explorer, do you see any other problems that could occur from this intake? It sounds pretty foolproof to me, but I'm very open to other people's opinions.

take a look at a 94+ mustang airbox/mass air, i think its the same concept in fact I'll go take a pic of mine...
OK... OOPS, the mustang airbox/mass air probably isnt like the 97 X
but I think is somewhat similar, except the mass air is more built in to the box-thing

Why did you use that piece of rubber in between the intake tube and the MAF sensor?

Also, just having a snug fit with the filter just shoved into the end of the MAF sensor housing isn't a good idea. Over time, vibration will work it free. Fabricate a bracket that will bolt to the housing (use a gasket) on one side and seal the filter to the other side of it.

yob-yeknom...well the MAF would not otherwise fit directly into the intake tube. It just sort of allows the MAF to fit into the intake tube...i ran two screws through the holes in the MAF and ran them through the outer metal part of the filter, so that won't be coming off.

Look, espnfreak, clamp a freakin' k&n to your stock air box and be done with it. I promise you won't see any better reults than with this "custom" setup.

Save your money for something better that's actually a mod that will be noticeable.

Ok ladies, lets relax. Jason, it's not worth your time here on this back and forth crap.

Jas, don't mess with this, just get a K&N and call it a day. Most performance gains from these setups are in the head. I have the same mod, KKM, and I haven't gained any MPG or performance. Should have stayed with the stock setup actually.

RangerFan, we are not trying to attack you personally. You have to understand that when you are dealing with a $25-30,000 vehicle, we'd rather not piece meal stuff together.

I disagree with anyone that wants to make some cheap Home Depot special when it has to do with the motor. Why not do it right the first time. It may be frugal, but it's just not the right way.
