ok, i keep breaking my cv axles.. and its always the front driver side.

now looking at the breaks, most seem to be from the axle 'separating'.. not actually breaking. i would also like to note, that its always the cv closest to the pumpkin on the driver side. so im wondering, could my front end be shifting? do i need new bushings? i honestly dont know what to do..

every time i go out, im breaking the driver side.. and this last time i wasnt even in difficult terrain. i got my rear diff on a rock and had to put it in 4wd to get off it. as soon as i engaged it POP it went. any help is really appreciated, pics to come soon.

no, no limiting straps, and i dont have a swaybar. i didnt think i would need limiting straps *shrugs*? howcome its always the driver side, and never passenger?

bump for night crew..

here are some pics after i cut the axle in half, because i didnt have the right spare  i bought an extra, but the wrong one was sent to me.. so i had no other option. the vendor that i bought it from is sending me another one, and there was no hassle.. thanks ped5stang

no one has any ideas why its doing this? hmm...

i have an axle on the way, when it arrives i might take it to a driveline shop, and see if they will cut it, and weld in a piece to extend it 1/2" or so. i think that might solve the problem?

I think you are getting too much travel.

You are either going to have to wheel it with the front swaybar hooked up or limit strap/chain it. IIRC most of the guys who push the limits of the stock IFS keep the swaybar hooked up for this very reason.

My $0.02 :)

Yeah I dont think its a length issue but an angle issue - cauz if length was the problem, then the CV shaft assembly should have pulled out of the axle tube since there's really no retainer or anything on that end.

If I remember correctly didn't mountaineergreen have an issue similar to this when he went to Moab? I think his Superlift bracket that held the axle in position was slightly bent shifting the axle over a little bit.

Ditto, the long travel is dropping it enough that the angle is too great. Jon just posted a link to an aftermarket suspension that uses Porsche axles evidently, adding 4.5" to each side track width. You might see if you could get an axle like that made to a length needed for the stock suspension.
Here's that link; http://www.dixonbrosracing.com/content/view/8/6/

I've got the limit straps on mine and haven't had any issues, so you may want to start there. Also take a look at the brackets that drop the front axle if they're shifting to the right that would account for the breakage only happening on the driver side.

well, it does kinda click in. here is what has been happening. the cv is just pulling apart, and it looks like i could just put it back together and it would be fine (if i didnt lose one of the bearings).

where did you get your straps?

i think most you are right, i might have to hook the front swaybar back on.. or use straps. damnit.

im also looking for an EB 44. i saw one for sale on the classifieds here(salt lake) for 150 bucks, but the guy sold it before i called

Nice T shirt

if you didn't lose one of the bearings you could have cleaned it all up nice and shiny, and regreased it,and put it back together,, heck why not,, it was working before it came a part,
a few tie wraps to hold the boot, and good to go again,, , i would think as the suspension droops that the spindle kind of swings out some and that is why they are coming apart,,

you mentioned getting a axle that is 1/2 longer,, but this raises a question about binding when the wheel is stuffed,in the wheel well, ,will the axle than be too long, and bind between the housing and the spindle,, ???
i agree with whomever said it was possible that the axle had shifted a bit to the opposite side,, ,

The straps I have came with the Superlift kit. I think I saw on here somewhere that you can get them separately.
