How stong are the Da35 5.13's?

I plan on 33's locked, 4.0 5spd, and a relatively low traction environment(bogs, swamp, clay) This will be under a Bronco2.

Anybody had problems that has run them?

are you sure you want to go that low with only 33's?

Dont htey only make 5.13's for the second gen?

if u are going to be driving it on the street than i strongly advise not going with 33s and 5.13s but if its just for offroad than it will be fine. and they do have 5.13s for the first gen

i agree with mitch. I'm going to run 5.13's in my d44 but will be turning 35" tires it will be offroad only too

A) Ford uses 'thick gears' with all their cooperate model differentials. Apparently the Dana 35 found in the TTB is not exempt from their policy, basically the bigger the gear the stronger it’s going to be. Strength shouldnt be much of an issue, the aluminum differential housing would be more of something to watch.

B) 5.13 is going to be very very low for 33"s, 4.56 is low enough... 4.88 would be ideal if you want extra/extra low-ness

C) 4.88 are actually not available for our model 35... Go figure (it is for second gen). At the moment it’s a rarity to find ANY gears available for our model35... some people are very frustrated at the moment trying to re-gear at a time they cannot because the gear companies are simply not making gears for our 'rarer' axle/differentials.

D) I’m running 4.56 no problem; numerous people have 5.13 in their model 35 without a problem... No problems other then what’s associated with any big gear, it gets hot. Plan to use expensive gear oil (synthetic 70w-140) to help mute the heat.

Well I have that set-up. 513's 4.0 5 speed. Also mini spool in the 8.8 and detroit locker in the 35, plus I'm running LTB 34 10.50 (they measure out to a little over 33).

I had to change out the speedo gear. Right after the swap I was showing 85+/- and was doing 65. Now I've changed out to the 21 tooth. Showing 70 and doing 64. Check by one of them road side radar signs.

I'm turning 27/800 rpms at 65. 3 grand at 70. I'm VERY happy with my set-up. Can't wait till the end of the month to play.

Well, road trips over 60 miles are rare for this rig, and I CAN get my hands on a set of 5.13's.

I have been having trouble finding gears for our customers (gear/driveline shop). You're right, they just aren't building them :fire:

I am concernd about the strength of the pinion on the 5.13s is all.

Thanks to everyone that answered

4.88 are not available for the reverse cut TTB D35 diff I dont believe.
its 4.56 or 5.13 :P

33's = 4.56 on 60 mile trips for sure. I know guys with 5.13 and 35's that cant go too far from Moab for a trail run because the engine is wrapped up...

The pinion should hold up fine. Just use snythetic 70w-140 for all the heat, 70w-90 would work.

ill be running 5.13 with 37's, i would stay go to 4.56's that will give you a good street, and excellent offroad

I have had 5.13's with 35 inch tires for a few years now. I have much more throttle control than with the 4.56's I had before. Its not a big deal on the street, unless you drive around at high speeds all the time. If you go with the 5.13's you will not have to re-gear ever again, when you decide to get some larger diameter tires, which you will. I skipped the 33's and went from 32's to 35's.
4.88's are not available for the reverse rotation D35.

5.13 with 35's whats your max speed and for how long before your 4.0L blows up?
I mean I know you drive that thing all over CA, just wondering what its like on the highway? can you do 75?

It goes fine in the street. The max speed I usually drive it on the freeway is 70-75 and its turning about 2800rpm. No problem for that high revvin 4.0 ;) .
Its soon to be a tow rig, after I get the 700R4 and NP231 swapped in.

You sure you wanna tow with the 700r4 after all the problems people (Jefe) have been having?
For the $$$ you could almsot get a 5.0L in there :P

Mmmmmmm 4r70W and Dana 20 = happy truck.

Well, since the NP231 has a true neutral, the tranny isn't going to be turning anyway when its towed. Doing this swap cost less than rebuilding the stock transmission, which I can't flat tow it with anyway without changing out the T-case.

It does??? the swap with the T case and new 700R4 is cheaper then a rebuild? are you sure?
YIKES!
Whos doing your rebuilds? hahaha

just giving you a hard time you know, I am just so pleased with the 5.0L drivetrain I want everyone to do the same, especially after seeing what Jefe has been through as of late with his Bowtie, for him the 5.0L conversion would be like a bolt in and with the 4R70W (or AOD-E) you have a large choice for T cases, from BW1350 series to Dana 20 (gearsets avail, many upgrades) to anything else that can go behind an AOD.

Now that we are getting totally off the subject matter of this thread :p
The 700R4 that we need to put in our Explorer's is not the right unit for a 5.0 swap. According to Advance Adaptor's, it won't work and one would need to change out the tranny for the V8 unit.

um yeah if I put a 5.0L in my truck I wouldback it up with either the C4 (wheeling only) AOD, or like I did the 4R70W (requires either Bauumenator stand alone trans controller, or late model GT-40 5.0L Explorer PCM and OBD-II, like my truck)

I was talking about doing the V8 conversion INSTEAD of trying to put the 700R4 behind your 4.0L.

Funny thing about threads, is they seem to change topic a bit, espeically after hte original question is pretty much covered, however the type of trans you have should definatley effect your axle gear ratio choice :)
