Dash & License Plate Bulbs - 194? 168?

After reading through MANY posts about these particular bulbs, i'm not sure what is the correct answer. The dash (instrument cluster) bulbs are all 194 wedge-style bulbs (?) and the license plate bulbs are truly (?) 168 but will accept 194 as well? Also, can the 4x4 switch bulb be replaced or is it part of the internal switch, and if it can what type of bulb is it?

After doing the search, i second the upgrade to "Sub-Forums," indicating the different generations being discussed. So many "informative" threads i found referred to generations that weren't mine.

Either 194 or 168 will be fine since they're essentially the same bulb with different wattage rating. As the 4x4 switch, good luck. Some dealers will make you buy the whole assembly. Some dealers will actually be able to find just the bulb but good luck finding one. Same goes for many lights like the fog/rear defrost buttons, headlight switch, cruise control, and the list goes on and on.

instead of buying a new bulb for your switch, how bout an LED and the necessary resistor? I've thought about doin this.

so, i take it the 4x4 bulbs et. al. are not standard autozone-available bulbs?
