My girlfriend has a 98 mustang gt with an automatic trans. The car drives fine but when you put it into gear from park to drive there is a slight rough engagement. This only happens on a warm restart after it has been sitting for a while. We are going on a long trip this weekend and don't want to run into any problems along the way.

Is car idling high?Is it ok into reverse?

Thanks TStone I will check it out

Cutter, all of the other gears engage and shift fine, including reverse. Idle is at 650 rpm which Haynes says is normal. There are no strange smells coming from the trans and the fluid looks bright red. I was thinking one of the solenoids was going out but there are no codes? I'am at a loss on this one.

EPC/TCC Solenoid, or a leaking Servo. My bet is more to a Servo going bad becaues it only does this after it's warmed up. Metal expands when it warms up so the bore could be nice and tight when cold, but loose it's ability to seal when warm, thus causing a decrease in line pressure.

Hey Rick thanks for your help,

We decided to take it to the dealer yesterday and found out that the EPC solenoid was out of range but not enough to set a code. I went ahead and ordered the revised Sonix solenoid because I don't trust the Ford replacement which they wanted $120.00 for. I hope this fixes it.
