Well, it can't be just anywhere, but there is some wiggle room. All the precise timing comes from the crank position.
I agree with what was said above. If the engine is at TDC #1 compression and you use the alignment tool, it should be fine. It doen't matter which way the synchronizer is pointing. It the alignment of the flag, gate, sensor that matters.
