Dextron, and Mercon?? Are they compatible?

+1 for the drain and refill with a new filter. As a bonus, it requires a lot less fluid than a true flush. I can't see why mixing Mercon V and Mercon would be bad, as I understand it, Mercon V is a tighter spec than Mercon and fully compatible.

This would be a good time to install the new accumulator piston addressed in this TSB, if you have the symptoms.

Really, I had no idea about this... I do notice it does shift very late out of 1 into 2, the RPMs go up very high. but this is usually under high load, like pedal to the floor. where can I get parts, and how bad is it to do?

That might be normal, all the cars with PCM controlled transmissions (electronic) will rev up higher before shifting gears under higher loads...

BUT it is only in that gear, which seems odd to me, other then that the transmission is great, never noticed anything else wrong with it.

Use Mercon V , I paid $5.30 CDN a Litre from Ford , and 16$ for the filter + pan gasket, took about 2 hrs

Tip: use a small jack stand to help with the pan if its only you under the vehicle

Mine also has the late 1-2 shift. To me it feels excessive, I'm guessing that my 1-2 piston is also worn like the TSB says, but it hasn't gotten bad enough for me to drop the pan (again). Had I known earlier I would have done it when I had the pan down.

Last I checked from Ford, the parts were not expensive, like $20 for the kit.

Well, since I can do it at my work on a lift, I might as well do it right? lol. I always feel when it shifts that late that something bad is going to happen, so far so good, but if there is a fix I don't see why I couldn't try it.

Well everybody, I dropped the pan, did not do the piston, due to me forgetting, and sort of doing it because I had time. But when I dropped the pan I was annoyed to find That little yellow plug that was installed at the factory, so at 184K was the first time the transmission fluid was ever changed, which sucks. Regardless I put in a new filter, and drain plug, and filled it back up, and proceeded to go drag racing the next day, and beat the crap out of it. I did roughly 10 passes, and did not break anything, YAY! but I for sure will not be flushing the fluid again, I don't want to risk ruining the trans, and my wallet.

With the "drain the pan" method nothing bad can happen to the transmission, you are fine.
