did 1st oil change-observations/questions

Thanks for the heads up on the Fram oil filters,I had no idea there were reported quality issues with their filters. I always thought they were a high quality vender for aftermarket filters. I could have purchased the oil filter from my local ford dealer but thought the fram would be better quality.

Did my first oil change at 1000 miles. I have wooden ramps I made too because I need to drive my Z06 up the ramps first before I can get jacks underneath to lift higher for an oil change.

Needless to say, changing the oil on the X is much simpler... one of the easiest cars and fastest I've changed oil on and well thought out with details like the butterfly screws for the airflow piece.

6 quarts of Ford synthetic blend 5w20 and the FL500S filter.
And to save time for some... 15mm drain plug.

Never buy Frams, I have seen many quality issues as well. I always use Mobil 1 filters. One of the best out there.. tested and proven.

Yes, I'll probably go with Mobil1 filters or stock up on Motorcrafts.
I'll be going full synthetic Mobil1 5w20 going forward.

So I picked up my Explorer on Thursday! (YAY!) (pics to come soon)

The Dealer indicated that Ford puts a special dye in the first oil that the dealership can use to check for leaks. (Maybe a UV dye or something)

Also he said that the drain plug is magnetic to catch the metal shavings from fabrication. He said some shavings are normal, but a lack of shavings or excessive shavings are a symptom of a problem.

He indicated that the dealership would check both and that he wanted me to come in at 3,000 miles. After he told me this, he gave me a coupon for a free oil change. :)

I just thought I'd throw it out there as some of you who prefer to do it yourself normally might wanna consider taking it to the dealer for the first oil change.

The manual indicates that to protect your engine AND engine warranty, use regular or synthetic SAE 5W-20 oil.
