Diff between 3rd gen v8 and 4th gen v8 engines?

I see... so which engine is better in general? smoother, longest lasting, less problems, etc....?
and also, are there any other big differences between the 3 trucks; e.g., exhaust systems, sway bars, etc?

Thanks for all the info.

The jury is still out on this one. The 2v 4.6's found in the 3rd gen Explorer's has been found to be a very reliable engine in the many vehicles it has been in. The 3v 4.6 seems to be doing pretty well but it has only been out for a few model years. Time will tell, but it seems like the 3v 4.6 is doing pretty well so far.

What 3 trucks are you talking about?

Sorry, rocekt5979, I thought I had included the aviator in here too... aviator, 2nd and 3rd gen x's.

They all run different engines so I would assume that the exhaust will not be the same, though it is probably routed similar to each other. I do not know about any suspension similarities or differences so I cannot tell you about anything there. It would take a look at the factory part numbers to see if they are the same thing between the 3 vehicles. I would bet that there will be allot of parts common to all 3 vehicles.
