What would happen if you put a higher gear on the rear axle but not the front?
Example
3.73ls into a 4.10 in the rear only, leave front stock.

What would happen

Most likely you would burn up the transfer case in the 4X4 mode. Since it not designed to turn at two different speeds.

i thought something along that line, is why i wanted to get the suggestions, there is a crap load of 2nd gen Xs in this area with 4.10 rears, but i dont know what to do about the front, trying to do it cheap and easy.

The only cheap way is to swap the entire front diff with the same size gear you have in the back.

It is going to cost me $350 in labor and $250 in parts for mine.

i was talking to four0sport about taking the rear from a 2nd gen, then finding a 4.10 dana 35 from a ranger for the front. or just swap the rear from a 2nd and pay to have the front redone.. just afraid of the cost... there are new 4.10 gears on ebay for like 50.00 then a shim kit is 100.00, afraid of the labor, lol.

I would say the labor is well worth the cost on gear setups. It's a precision thing.

Be cautious that the 4.10 you may find in a Ranger is the hybrid 35 which is not as strong.

Nice thing about grabbing a 2nd gen is you upgrade to disc brakes in the rear.

Although if you're going to spend $600-750 for 4.10s, I'd much rather see a guy spend $1000 on 4.56 or 4.88. I don't think you would notice much change to think it's worth the money to go from 3.73-4.10

BINGO!!! changing from 3.73 to 4.10 was a HUGE waste of $$$$$
hardly any difference at all

Now with that said, putting 4.10 in the front is not too expensive IF you do half the work yourself....you can take the differential off the beam and take it to the gear shop yourself, then re-install it when they are done... this will save you about 5 hours of shop labor, which around here is $90 an hour.....

the ONLY time you can have different gears front and rear in a 4x4 is if you have different size tires front and rear to go with it.....to keep the rotating assembly within like 1-3% of each other, otherwise t case go KABLOOEY

i say take it to a shop its well worth it to have it done correctly. maybe you can watch them set up the gears?..so you get an idea of whats going on.

Now wait... As long as he dont engage the 4 wheel drive he would be fine..Correct ? Just change the front gearing before engageing 4 wheel drive. Maybe ?

I wanna run 35s eventually is why im looking at regearing.. only reason i was looking at 4.10 swap in the rear was because i was going by the chart which 4.10 woulda been fine for them 35s in the rear. i wanna go to 4.56/4.88 thatll havta wait quite a while.. lol

refering to what dllb said, does he have a point; not using 4x4 mode only the rear would be fine?

You won't be happy with 410's and 35's-- You would be going to allot of expense for something you don't want.

That chart is not for your Trans. that Chart is assuming a 1:1 final ratio in the transmission. Thats the c4,c6,turbo 350, turbo 400 etc.. Non Overdrive transmisions. IIRC your a4ld has a .8:1 final drive meaning you want to be 20% numerically higher in your gear ratio selection than what that chart says.

glad that was pointed out, i was just told by a local friend of mine, that i should prob measure... and make sure i wont be breaking the light law in Ohio if i do the 3" bl and 35s, since ive already done the 4.5" susp lift... i didnt think any thing about it.. shesh.

As it was stated above, don't waste your time with 4.10's if your reason is that you want 35's... If you're gonna run the 31's, the 3.73's will work. Save your pennies and when you got the scratch together, which is a lot BTW, Get your 35's and 4.88's or 5.13's. Be patient and don't waste your cash on useless upgrades. The disc brakes would be nice but changing the ratios is not gonna be worth it.
