Hi everyone, i purchased a replacement tranny for my 97 4x4 explorer OHV, and they sent me a SOHC. what sucks even more is that they dont have any OHV's. they look identical, but can anyone tell me if they could be interchanged? i know the parts finder says no, but i dont know what the difference is?
thanks!!

I'm not sure what the difference is, but I don't think there is a significant difference between them. The SOHC puts out more torque than the OHV, so if there is an internal difference, the SOHC version should be stronger.

I'll see what I can find.

I belive it's just a bell housing. Ford likes to stardize everything

Looking at my 97 manual, there are differences between the 2wd and 4wd which are pretty obvious: The extention housing and the pan are different. The pan is deeper for the 4wd models and of course the extention housing is different because of the transfer case.

I did find some "model" dependent differences in the parts list:

7A463 Bracket - Front Band Lever to Case

E450102-S80 Plug - Pipe Line and EPC Pressure (Part of Case Assembly) (2 Req'd)

7L491 Clamp - TCC/SS4/SS2 and EPC Solenoids

I think that it is possible that the SOHC version is "tuned" differently because of the greater torque output of the engine. I'm sorry I don't have any more specific info.

Doesn't the '97 4.0 OHV use the 4R55E where the SOHC used the 5R55E? (4-spd vs. 5-spd) If so, will the PCM be able to figure it out?

My 97 has a 5R55E and OHV. The Ford manual only covers the 5R55E and the 4R70W (V8 Explorers).

In '97 all V6s went to the 5 speed.

I'll have to crawl under my truck and my Wife's to see any noticable differances. Mine is 4x4 OHV and Her's is 4x2 SHOC

I say bolt it up and be happy, it will likely go right in.
