I recently found a 2000 4.0 engine from a ranger, supposed to have like 83k on it, was wondering if it was a OHV if it would bolt on my 96 4.0 OHV with no problems, or would I have to swap some of my sensors over to the newer engine, would rather go this route if I could get things lined up instead of going through mine and spending $1200+. Any help is appreciated as I tried to search but couldn't come up with anything for sure, I'm theory they couldn't have changed that much in 4 years could they?

you will have to swap all sensors, even the cam sensor (found that one out the hard way once). the only other difference may be if one motor is internal egr, and the other isnt. if the egr system is different, you will have to swap the drivers side manifold, and upper intake. you will also want to see if the injectors are the same color (i think different colors mean different lbs/hr). and lastly, the motor mounts may also be different.
swapping all that stuff isnt hard if you have both motors sitting beside each other.

I think you would be fine doing what Tim suggests.
Ive read that as the years progressed, they only 'added' holes to the block. So that means even if the motor mounts are different, you could use your current mounts in the proper position without an issue.

Post #2 is correct just set them next to each other and swap. they did change a few things. Helped a co-worker a few years ago with a explorer with a ranger motor we had to swap stuff just don't remember.

Ok, thanks guys, I appreciate the help, that explains a lot, I just thought goin this route would be cheaper than a full out overhaul on mine, cuz I get carried away when it comes to buying parts. I figure if I get it, I would like to replace all the upper gaskets and the oil pan gasket and rear main seal, what brand would you guys recommend?

if your going to pull the pan, one thing i would recommend doing is putting a new oil pump in, as well as a water pump. its all easy to get at when the motor is out, and nothing is in the way. you dont have it, i would just recommend it. felpro are good gaskets, but everyone has their favorites.

^ This...Except:
The 4.0l never had an internal EGR... No worries there.

i swear the 99 ranger i had this summer (4L ohv) had a internal egr. no pipes coming off the manifold, or upper intake. if its a sohc, then i agree with you 100%

Thanks guys, I was already thinkin waterpump, never thought about the oil pump, as far as felpro, what are the permatorque like? Would perma dry be better? I don't wanna go back if I get it in there lol

get the melling high volume oil pump. you might as well. Might reduce valvetrain noise a bit, and extend motor life some.

Where can you get it at? Lol I've found the sealed power on rock auto. I may not be able to for sure get the engine , but it would be a big upgrade considering mine has over 300k , and I wanna keep this vehicle for a while longer since I'm building a house, no since getting into a note, and I thought that one with low mileage would be better than spending a large amount ony current one. Still gotta finish my from suspension but that's only another $100 in parts plus alignment.

Also without creating Nother thread, what would the differences be between my 96 trams and a 99 trans?

the later model trans are 5r55e, yours is a 4r55e

Ok I got to looking, from what I can tell, it would bolt up, but would need to change neutral switch and computer for it to be fully compatible? Or am Iossong something ?

High Volume oil pump: part number: MEL-M328 from summit racing $148.99

Its more complicated then that... I've yet to see a thread where someone swapped the 5r in place of a 4r and got it working 100% correctly on the stock system.

Thanks, well, that throws that out the window lol, oh well, I can just focus on one project at a time, one last question, is the trans mount the same for a 4x4 vs 2x4 on the 2nd gen x's?

Good pointers, thanks, Woody
