Alright I really would like to put a limited slip onto my Explorer. How would I change the differental...do i need to get a whole new rear axel? Also how hard is it to change if its not an axel swap. Thanks.

An entire axle swap would be the easiest and fastest route - you just need an extra set of hands to help you move the axles around.

As an upgrade, you can try going with a 95-01 axle as those will have disc brakes (but you'll probably need a proportioning valve for the back axle if you go this route).

so in theroy i could do the swap if i had an extra pair of hands or two? awesome! also how much harder is it to put a 95-01 axel on compared to a 91-94?

Its not any more difficult - its just you're going from drum brakes to disc brakes and often times, you'll need some sort of proportioning valve or else usually the back brakes will lock up before the front brakes. So after you install the proportioning valve, you'll need to spend a few minutes (or an hour) in the rain and an empty parking lot playing around with the proportioning valve so that the front brakes lock up before the rear brakes (because a locked rear will cause the vehicle to rotate)

EDIT -- here read this, some info: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=140502

alright that sounds cool where would i get the valve or is it already on the axel or whatever? haha. Also any idea how much a axle from a 95-01 will cost vs a 91-94?

A Question on this subject. I want to replace my rear axel on my 98 4x4 6cyl with 3.55 gears with a limited slip 3.73 from a 98 V8. will this match up with my front drive ok or will it bind up the transfer case with miss matched gearing. ? any help is appreciated

This is a big fat NO.

Always have to match front & rear gearing ratios to at least .01 difference. ie.. 410 front/411 rears. The Transfercase can handle a tiny fraction of difference, due to chain slop, but that's it. Anything greater than would destroy either a differential, a driveshaft, and/or the Transfercase.

That 98 V-8 will have the front differential with the matching 3:73 gears. Swap out the front from it, if your doing this.

thx for reply....the parting out 98EB with the 3.73 LS is a 2wd.... Unfortunately
