I've got a 1999 Ranger XL Sport 2WD with 147k on it. It's recently gotten difficult to shift occasionally. It can usually be fixed by turning it off and restarting, but it's happening more often lately. I was hoping someone might be able to help me diagnose and point me towards a fix that I can hopefully do myself. I've got a motorcycle that I do all my own work on, but the truck is foreign territory for me.

Assuming that you have a manual transmission, the most likely culpret is the pilot bearing or throw out bearing in the clutch. The only real fix is a new clutch, and include a new slave cylinder. If it is the transmission, then a rebuild with new bearings and sycronicers will be required.

Then again check and or change the fluid, that can sometimes solve a shifting problem.
