Anybody ever heard of this? I know it works on my 03 mach 1, so i tried on my explorer and it works on this too.

If you hold down your trip odometer button with the car off for a few seconds, and then start it, the screen will say TEST. You can then cycle through different displays including engine rpm, speed, oil pressure or maybe temperature, can't remember ..., it does a gauge check and pegs out all your gauges and brings em back and lights up all the lights on the cluster.

Just figured i would share. It's kinda cool I think.

I tried it on my '02 XLT without message center and all it did was reset my tripometer to 0. :dunno:

Rondo, you do it with the truck off, then while still pushing, turn the truck on. Works on mine and I don't have a message center either

Yea hold it down with your left hand for a few seconds with the vehicle off then start it and keep holding it until your odometer says "test". Then you can cycle through with the reset button.

I got it to work, although it still reset my tripometer to 0. I wonder how we can decipher the readout? I would like to know what all that stuff means. I had no idea what I was looking at. :dunno:

I did get DTC 5284. Anybody know what this code is? My check engine light is not on.

Jads web link says that code is for "Oil Pressure Switch failure".

I just figured that out. Also, from what I have read, everyone seems to think it not an issue since it is only being reported on the instrument cluster and hasn't lit the SES light. Who knows. Seems the engine was a much simpler thing without all this "technology". :p:

Gone are the days of the old dashboard "idiot lights" that flashed once in a great while. Now your vehicle has to tell that you need to change your oil soon, I guess writing your mileage down at each oil change never worked right before, or one of your doors is open etc with an annoying, beeping chime etc. I guess the fact you knew you opened your door or the dome light coming on when one was opened up wasn't enough of a warning sign for us. Each time a warning beep or message lights up on my Ex, I'm expecting it to go to DEFCON 5 and the world is about to blow up. It's kind of like big brother watching over your shoulder, but big brother isn't the Gov't, it's Ford Motor Company. There is an old saying out there and knowing from your posts you were in the military and I worked in law enforcement under a Para-Military run Dept, you and I have definately heard this saying before, KISS or Keep It Simple Stupid!

When you say it "does a gauge check", are you saying the vehicle computer does a diagnostic scan of each dash gauge to ensure if each gauge is working correctly? Also, what does "peg out the gauges and bring'em back" mean?

The gauges peg - go to the highest point - all the way up and then back down.

Not only does my test return DTC 5248, but DTC 1197 as well.

Not exactly sure why you said this but just to be clear on my end of it, I didn't make the KISS reference about you, nor would I ever. You help alot of people out in here with tech help including myself, just stated it about Ford for the over abundance of redundant sensors. You'd think we were driving the Space Shuttle. I also highly respect you for your many years of military service because I come from a family with a long line of relatives in the military, with a grandfather, father, uncle-(Died in service, Korean War -accident on leave in Tokyo,Japan) and brother-in-all having served in the wars from WW1,WW2, Korean War and Vietnam. My father drove a "low boy" type truck and trailer, hauling either 2- 35 ton tanks or 2-105 MM Howitzer Cannons back and forth from the Depots to the front lines while serving in France and Germany 1943-1945. He was in Germany at the time the war ended.

So having tried this self diagnostic test only caused you to get a few "false" sensor error codes? I'm thinking this is why you made the stupid comment about yourself, for having tried this test and causing you some temporary grief with the false sensor error codes. I think I'll skip trying this test unless I can get some actual uselful info or benefits from attempting it. With my luck, I would cause somethimg else to go wrong with the pcu system by trying to do this.

Yes it lights up every instrument on the instrument cluster and does a full sweep of each hamd that moves.

Your are correct. I was making fun of myself. Hey, if you can't laugh at yourself then who can you laugh at?
