Hey guys,
I have a '95 XLT and I don't like my dash lights. They seem really dim to me, and others have noticed it as well. The 0 - 40 section of my speedo, and my fuel gauge a barely illuminated. The rest of the dash is pretty dim too. And I am aware of the dashboard dimmer switch. It functions properly. Are the dim lights a low voltage problem?? Has anyone else had a problem with dim dash lights, or dash lights burning out? Has anyone upgraded their dash with brighter lights? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Did you get your '95 new or used? I got my now deceased '95 in '98 and within a year the 60-up side of the speedo went out (the other bulbs lit it a bit, but...). I got my '96 this past August, and it has the 0-40 side of the speedo out. I'm sure it's just a bulb, I think there are 3 back there, but as of yet I haven't found it distracting enough to pull the guage cluster out to repace it. There are a few white face replacement kits out there. I think APC has one. Good luck,

I got my '95 used. The 0 - 40 and the fuel gauge were out when I got it. I'm thinking like you are, like it has to just be a bulb or two. Hopefully, I'll pull my dash apart over the Christmas break and change those bulbs. I'm tired of people asking me, "Why are your dash lights so dim??" Does anyone happen to know what type of light goes back there and it's model number?? And where can I get a good set of lights that are bright and will last, cause I'm planning on changing them all. A white face replacement kit sounds really nice, but I'm gonna have to see about that. Thanks for the help.

Well, I just replaced all of my guage cluster bulbs and man is it nice to have a dash that actually lights up at night!!! They were a breeze to change, once you get the guage cluster out. My dash was a bit stubborn on the side with the headlight controls, but I was able to do the job without unplugging the switches, which made it a little easier.

So how about a detailed description of gettin that dash apart? I'm gonna have to take the plunge now. Maybe I'll just get one of those white or other cool color guage faces while I'm at it.

I wish I had gotten a white face guage kit before I did this, cause it would have been soooo easy to do while I was in there. But I can't afford one, so oh well.

Well, to get the dash apart, start by removing the two screws above the climate controls. The black trim that holds the radio just snaps off after the screws are removed. Carefully unsnap the black trim and pull it out a bit (the four wheel drive switch will likely need to be unplugged to allow enough clearance. I don't even have 4x4 but the plug for the switch is there anyway) You don't have to totally remove the radio and trim, just pull it out some.

Then move to under the steering wheel. The plastic cover (where the hood latch is) beneath the steering wheel has a screw on the right corner and one on the left corner. It also has two that hold the hood release on. Remove all four screws and unsnap the top edge to remove the panel.

Under the plastic panel you just removed, there is a metal plate. It has a screw in each corner. These may be tight (mine were) but they'll come loose. Remove all four and the panel will fall off. You should now see one or two screws (mine only had one in it, but there is supposed to be another) holding the bottom of the upper dash panel on. Remove these two.

Now sit in the driver's seat, set the parking brake, put the shifter into 1, and tilt the steering wheel to its lowest position. Remove the three screws just over the guages. There may be a screw that was hidden by the radio trim, look for it and remove it as well.

Now, carefully pull on the dash panel, the radio side first. It's a little tight to get out, but it'll go. You'll soon run into trouble with the headlight and dimmer switch. Their wires are kinda short. You can unplug them if you want, but I left them alone. I just carefully twisted the dash panel over the steering column without binding the wires and set it on my leg.

Now you will see the guage cluster. There are 4 screws holding the cluster in (one per corner). Remove these and carefully work the cluster out. Remove the gear indicator as soon as you can get to its snaps. The cable is really short, which makes it difficult, but with a little patience it'll come out.

If you're just replacing bulbs, you can do so without unplugging the guages. Just twist it to the left and right enough to get your eyes and a pair of pliers behind it. There are 6 illumination bulbs. Their sockets are the black ones, the largest of them all back there. Just twist them to the left and they unsnap and can be removed.

If you wanna clean your guages (mine were dusty) or if you are installing a guage kit, you'll want to remove the clear cover. You may want to unplug the cluster and remove it from the truck to install a guage kit. The cover is held on by the 7 gold colored screws around the cluster. Remove them all and the cover will come off. Be carefull with the needles!!

Assembly is the reverse.

Hope this helps you out.

The dash bulbs should be number 194

hey stephen great description i need white face guages and am thinking of going to nrauto and its kinda dirty back behind my face thing. hey i could even turn the odometer back a few. just kidding :-) . so did you put brighter bulbs back behind there or just ford replacements?

Thanks Jas, I'm just trying to be helpful. I replaced all the bulbs with new ones I got at Auto Zone. They were Sylvania bulbs. I wasn't aware of it when I bought the bulbs, but upon comparison, the original bulbs appeared to be Sylvania as well. So I suppose they were simply stock replacements. But no complaints here...it's nice to see how much gas you have left at night too :)

im going to print that out when i need to put my white face guages in. ya sylvania is what ford uses, when i took out my old headlights they were sylvania. anyways where can i get a good white face guages? p.s. i am beginning work on that little explorer light. 3 months almost...:D

Jas, I'm not real sure where you would go to get a white fase guage kit, but I'm sure someone around here knows. Try a search. When I was looking into getting the kit I think I remember a site called www.nrauto.com being one of the places that had it.

And good luck with the EXPLORER light. Keep me posted on your progress and take some pictures, like I forgot to do when I made mine. Take your time and I'm sure you can figure out how to get it done.

ya i've done a few searches and only found nrauto.com i hope anyone can suggest ways to change my guages and "spruce" up the whole dash look. anyways how long did it take to get the dash off? those are pretty detailed instructions. nrauto.com has the guages for 120 bucks and im just not sure if its worth that much money for a white display. i'm still thinking and planning out my options

Yeah, I thought the white face guage prices were a little too steep too, which is why I did not opt to get them. The dash disassembly can be done in about 30-40 minutes or so if you haven't done it before and you take your time. Pretty easy job really.

aren't there like overlays that will work

I started a new thread about the LEDs in the rest of the console; I would like to change them to blue. Do the Sylvania 194's come in blue?

Jas, yes I believe that the white faced guages for the Explorer are overlays, but I am not 100% certain.

Sean, the LEDs in the guage cluster are used for things like the light for the emergency brake, seat belt, cruise control, and other warning lights for the vehicle. I would not advise changing the color of the LEDs. Secondly, the illumination bulbs are regular clear light bulbs, not LEDs, in case you were confused about that. I think you can find them in blue at your local auto parts store, but I am not quite sure why you want to change yours to blue. My guages are already illuminated blue from the factory.

i meant like cheaper overlays that will work. could you custom craft one?

Jas, all of the white faced guage kits that I have seen have been expensive; in the $90 - $125 range. I don't think I'd want to try and make one myself though. That would be plenty of hassle getting all the numbers on the speedo and tach spaced and in the right places and then getting the pieces cut nicely to fit and all.....too much trouble. Better off just dropping the cash and buying a kit IMO.

Nice work!

oso_polar, you did a nice job with your webpage! The pictures you took really help out when coupled with the written explanation. Good work. :) I appreciate you mentioning me on your webpage as well. It feels good to know that I was able to help someone out. With your pictures, it will make it even easier for someone to get the job done.

Also, man that is one heck of a front bumper you've got there. Do you have any more pictures of your truck?? The lower control arms look like they angle down at an angle much sharper than mine do. Have you tightened the torsion bars (done the torsion twist as it is called around here)??
