I think you would do better with open and some bald boggers

the only thing holding me back from putting a locker upfront is the roads around here in the winter. I hit the mountains from charlotte (3 hr drive) two or three times a week during the winter and when it snows around here, they dont plow!

Three letters

Being locked is one of the best mods to do. With my old ranger (lockright front detroit rear) I did some snow driving on the roads with this setup. i went slow and took my time and never had much of a problem with the handling of it setup this way. However we are talking snow in the san diego mountains which 3" is usullay alot and the most I ever drove it in was 10". It is all two lane highway and no freeway conditions to speak of. It could snow one day and be 70 degrees the next but would still get in the 20s that night. That ment alot of black ice on the roads. Besides what are you driving an off road vechile or a grocery getter :D

haha a very fun grocery getter.

no im kidding. Yes i'd LOVE something selectable. Infact i think im gonna look into getting a used one from a jeep guy.

i just dont wanna dish out a grand for new one though... i guess i need something a lil more temporary. Money is at hand, i got a solid axle on the brain, and as long as i can play in the clay im straight.

Hey, just ran into this problem on a friend`s 8.8, and figure grinding/ notching is the only way. i know it`s an old thread..
Jus` wondering though, GJarret, how do you slide the ring gear past the pinion gear, with "everything in place" You have to have the pinion shaft out to put the c-clips on the axle ends and if you`re putting the c-clips in and trapping them in place with the pinion shaft, the pinion gear would have to be installed
You eatin too many moon pies? :p: :p:

You do it with everything in place - including the axle (C-clip and all) - so that's not an issue. Once I put the locker in, the ring gear was so thick that it blocked part of the hole that the crosspin slipped in. What I did was unbolt the ring gear from its carrier while it was still installed in the assembly, then slid the entire ring gear all the way to the other side across the locker. It slid far enough over to clear the crosspin hole completely on the ring gear's backside. I put the pin in, then slid the ring gear back over to its place, and rebolted it on the carrier. No grinding required.

Hey Jim, I'm gonna cop out on you. I did this about three years ago and honestly cannot remember exactly how I did it. You're right though; the pinion should block the ring gear's movement so I'm stumped too. I do clearly remember unbolting the ring gear and sliding it across in order to stuff the cross shaft in. I did do it so at least in a second gen front diffy it can be done, though I'd have to open mine up again to be able to see how it worked. In the second gen front diffys the C-clip is a plastic pliable one, not a hard metal one, and the axle can be inserted/moved without being totally locked in place like on the 8.8 . Maybe I was able to insert the cross shaft into the locker with it not quite in all the way and was then able to move the ringgear back over and then finish inserting it afterwards (?) I have no idea.

When i had 4.56's in the rear, i put two or three different carriers in, diffferent lockers, welded the diff, etc, i had one tooth ground way down, but if you look at the way the pinion gear mates to the ring gear, there are usually 2 or three teeth engaged at a time.....

I`m gunna go ahead and cross reference this thread to another where I talked more about, then remedied this problem.

GJarret, lol sorry to tax the memory like that, anyway I worked it out -hope you`re doing okay these days and maintaining that oath me and my family watched you take in May of '04 ;)

We tentatively plan a return to those hallowed grounds in `09, if life don`t throw us any curveballs...
