I have a slight leak in my cooler for my power steering. I was going to purchase a new one and replace it but was wonder if I really even need it. Can I just bypass the cooler and put a elbow in the line????? Please help.
you could do that for a temp fix , but i would get a cooler and put it back in soon,
the power steering in Explorers is not exactly very strong, but good enough, so it will get warm , even hot, and that is bad for pumps and rack and pinion units,
Heat destroys not only the fluid , but also the seals,
Try a salvage yard. Maybe you could get a low mileage used one for cheap. I don't think the coolers fail very often so a salvage one would probably serve you well enough.
I got a PS cooler from ped5stang in the for sale forum. He owns a yard with a bunch of mustangs and explorers from what I understand. He does ship so if there is not a yard in your area its a decent option.
don't run without a cooler! Another option is a small trans cooler, they have them at auto stores. You may have to be a bit creative with the fittings.
Some 1st gens did - in the pic below, the cooler on the driver's side (rotated 90 degrees) was pulled from a 1st gen, the one on the passenger's is the stock one that came with my 2nd gen. In comparing the two, the 2nd gen's appears to have a better cooling fin design.
I gotta find one of these as well...................... its only single pass so maybe I can find something to rig up instead of buying one from the dealer for $100+
