I just bought a 99 Ranger - I recieved 1 key w/ it. The THEFT light is blinking and I've got NADA when I attempt to start it. Battery is good. All other electrical works. I'm trying to find out if the engine in the truck is any good. The guy I bought it from never got it started, gave up and sold it. I'm wondering if I can bypass the relay, if so, where is it?

i do believe you have to go to the dealership, and they have to reprogram your computer, you can't bypass it. sorry dude.

thats what I'm thinking too, Bro.

do you have the right coded key? a locksmith can reprogram it. they usually only charge about $50 and come to you. pats can be bypassed but only by an aftermarket tuner.

Not sure about the key, I only got one from the guy I bought it from, he bought it not starting as well, gave up and sold it to me. I think you need 2 keys and a dealer scanner to recode............... not real sure. anyone know what will happen if I just swap out the engine for a 5.0 and it's computer? Can I just change the steering collumn and get rid of pats? Thanks men.

Yeah best thing to do is call a locksmith.. Or if you wanna spend the money get a Auto Enginuity OBDII PC based reader along with the Ford enhancement software that enables you to reprogram pats locks, read airbag & tranny codes, etc.. The only drawback is that is about $430

locksmith it is.........thanks.

Or-
you can get an SCT excalibrator and have James just turn the PATS off-along with a performance tune to boot-

And you'll also have a future tool to use for diagnostic purposes, on any ford vehicle.

Welcome to the forum! Please be aware that you are responding to a thread that's been inactive for 13 years. As for that sct tool, Google is your friend.

Be faster just to have your setup fixed. It’ll blink out a code for what it thinks the issue is. Most likely it’s lost the programming, or your receiver is failed.

Welcome to the forum!

You are not off to a good start, having failed to research yourself what these are, and not mentioning your specific problem.

As Mbrooks mentioned, you're usually better off just fixing the problem, unless trying to reuse the engine and ECM dropped into some other vehicle that doesn't have the PATS circuit or same ignition cylinder/area on column, for the keys and transponder mount.

I just went thru something similar with a 98 Explorer 5.0 I bought a month ago. Only had 1 key and wouldn't start, and an anti theft code. I had my auto locksmith come out to make new keys and reprogram it. And it wouldn't reprogram any keys. Long story short, I had to get a new PATS box from the junkyard. Its behind the passenger airbag. Once I replaced that I actually just bought a new lock cylinder because they come with two keys. I Installed that and programmed the keys myself with a SnapOn Solus scanner. Starts right up now. But as long as your PATS system is functioning correctly just have an auto locksmith come out. They'll have it running in 5 minutes.
