I changed out the heads on a 91 navajo, I had the new heads (used) magnafluxed and resurfaced. Since I have installed them I am getting a nasty ticking sound behind the coil area; it is not a lifter. The vehicle has also run really poor since the installation. There is a rich fuel smell and the truck has been idling terribly. When it is in gear it feels like it is struggling and it is not drivable. I have had the negative battery disconnected many times and the computer does not seem to be able to reset itself to run right. Any ideas on a good plan of action? I'm lost.

I'd say that nasty ticking sound is what I would look too first before dealing with anything else. I'm gonna say that's got to be part of it. A good part I would guess. It could be your PCM is weird or fried, but I would bet that ticking will lead you to your problem.

Nothing should be ticking back there that I know of, so something ain't right.

Probably a stupid question... have you check the wires and firing order?

wires and order have been checked and rechecked. everything is good in that regard. The injectors are wired up the right way too. They are all clicking when heard through a stethoscope. Could a lower intake manifold be the culprit? I mean if it was loose? could that be the cause of the tick? I added sealant and torqued everything down correctly.

ticking behind the coil sounds like an errant spark jumping to the intake, to make a ground,
and with it a cylinder misfire , causing the roughness, and gas smell from unburnt fuel
check the wires, make sure they are on all the way ,

wires have been replaced, coil replaced, plugs replaced, sounded like a premature grounding issue. I did not see anything (spark wise) when checking out everything at night.the truck shoots off one hell of a spark (I know because the current has traveled through me a few times)

The manifolds and exhaust is nice and tight and free of leaks. There is no difference if the exhaust crossover is on or off; the engine still has the same running condition.
