I have a '91 EB 4x4 with about 175K miles.
I have replaced both heads and it runs pretty well.
But, I get this annoying "clacking" noise that starts around 3000 RPM that I cant find.
I have thoroughly searched for exhaust leaks, no luck.
I replaced all my lifters recently when I replaced the heads.
I have seen a bunch of YouTubes about later engines having a similar noise due to something going wrong with the timing chain.
Does the first gen 4.0 have the same problem?

no sir! assuming its the factory motor, your 1st gen should have the OHV motor. the timing chain issues are with the sohc. not sure what the noise could be, however. :D

The pushrod 4.0 (1990-2000) does not have overhead cams or all of those chains, guides and tensioners

However you do have hydraulic lifters pushrods and stamped rockers that can get very noisy when something goes wrong or gets worn

Where does the noise emanate from?
