On my Mountaineer the drivers side door is always showing the door ajar indicator. Is the sensor for that in the latch assembly? Also the interior lights no longer come on when the door is opened. Probably because the truck thinks the door is always open and has some kind of timer on the interior lights? All other doors will chime when opened and the lights come on.

yep... lots of posts about this problem. Remedies range from "massive" amounts of WD40 in the latch area, to slamming, to replacement. As for lights, do they come on when you rotate your dimmer to full on? Check the lamps, potentially they are burnt out.

The lights come on with the dimmer and when another door is opened. That is why I thought that might be triggered in the latch assembly as well.

Ok... thanks for the additional info. Yes, your premise is right... the actual "turn on" of the courtesy lights is control by the GEM which gets its "signal" from the door switches when then change "state" (ie. go from open to close, close to open). As you surmize, since your door never "closes", I think the GEM eventually disregards its state... kind of part of the battery saver circuit I suspect. You could probably check this by disconnecting the battery cables for 15 minutes then re-connect and check the lights when you open and close the offending door..... which might not mean anything since it never changes "state" if the switch is stuck.
