I have a 91 Ranger Ext Cab 4X4 that has the Drive Shaft Coupling kit from Remco installed on it, which is starting to create a problem. The kit itself would still work, but the collar that goes around the disconnect flange has worn and is starting to make noises in the rear end of the vehicle. I finally got under the truck and figured out the cause of the problem and decided to remove the disconnect, since I will never use it on this old truck. What I am left with is a split drive shaft with teeth on each side that is being spanned by the disconnect pulley. In the meantime, I installed a hose clamp to hold the pulley in place to make sure the teeth don't become disengaged during normal driving, but I would like to make a more permanent.
Does anyone have experience with this setup? I would like to just have the pulley welded into place since my truck is old and it's not worth replacing the drive shaft. I assume this would be an easy fix to the setup, but I was wondering if anyone else came across this issue? I also wonder if I need to do anything since it appears that the collar will always float to the back of the vehicle due to centrifical force and the angle of the driveshaft, which would keep it engaged at all times. Any suggestions?
