I have a 91 with the split front axle. I want to take the diff off but am not sure if you need to take all of one side out with the diff or can you just unbolt the diff and drop it out.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't think you HAVE to but it sure would be easier to drop both sides

thanks fixxxer. I am hoping to just unbolt the diff and drop it out and not have to take half of the front axle out with it.

Taking out the half-shafts is the EASY part!

welcome

i have a 91 explorer 4x4. it has dana 35's front and rear. the stock front end that is in it now is that split "I beam" where it pivots in the middle. one long axle on passenger and on short on drivers side. hope that explains it. i am getting ready to take the differintal off and am not sure if I have to take the whole thing out to remove the diff or if the diff will unbolt and fall off the backside. i think it will just unbolt and come off but wanted everyones opinion before i got in the middle of it and found out i was wrong.

You have a Ford 31 spline 8.8 in the back, not a D35.
There is an E-clip on the inside of the diff that holds the passenger shaft so it's very awkward to pull the diff off the beam and mess with that. I would, pull the spindles off, remove the passenger axle from the slip joint that's clipped into the diff and drop the whole beam, then remove the drivers side shaft (no clip holding it in) and remove the pig from the beam, you will probably have to loosen the rad arm from the beam and rotate so you can remove the pinch bolt as well.

Thanks HahnsB2 for clearing that up for me. I was afraid that i was going to have to tear into it but was hoping not too. Oh well not a big deal and thanks again for helpin' me. Ok one more item...I would like to put a straight axle in the front but am not sure how to go about picking the right one or how to measure for leaf springs and everything that goes along with doin' that.

Your starting to get off topic for the stock 1st gen forum.. Check out the modified forums for SAS (straight axle swap) information.
